Grants represent money or other resources given to support research or development projects.  Unlike a loan, grants are a gift and the funds do not need to be repaid.
 
Organisations that provide grant funds have specific interests that they seek to fund.  They advise the public about their grants by announcing a Call for Proposals (Call) or Request for Proposals (RFP): providing details of the themes they are interested in, the application process and deadlines.  The time between the announcement of a Call and application deadline is normally very short, so it is a good idea to have research or project proposals ready and awaiting a specific a Call.
 
Competition for grant funding is very high.  Therefore, it is important to learn as much about a funder as possible and follow the application requirements very carefully.  Guidelines on how to prepare a proposal for a grant can be found here.
