• Your acceptance letter will indicate the programme in which you've been offered a place. In some instances, this may differ from the programme of first choice.

• This affects the number of courses you can register for in a semester in the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).

• A co-requisite is a course that is required to be taken concurrently with another course. Consult your Departmental or Faculty Handbooks for course details, including co-requisites.

• Firstly, new FST students should visit their respective department (whether it is the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences – BCS OR the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP).

• Also, it depends on the programme you are completing. You should also check the Faculty Handbook to view the courses which are required for your programme. Each programme is made up of four Levels: Level I, Level II, Level III and Foundation Courses. In order to complete your degree, you are required to satisfy the requirement below:

• Please note that for Double Majors and some Minor combinations, you may be required to take more than 24 credits at Level I depending on the disciplines being combined.

• It is strongly recommended that you complete the courses offered at a particular Level before attempting courses at another Level. This is especially important for Level 1 of your programme. These courses collectively ground you for the magnitude and quality of work expected at this stage of your academic development. It therefore provides a solid foundation on which to build as you advance in your disciplines at Levels II and III of your programme.

• A student must complete the Request for Credits/Exemptions form (Online) and then submit it to the Dean’s Office via email at fst@cavehill.uwi.edu for processing.

• You can count a maximum of 3 co-curricular credits (one course) toward your degree at Cave Hill Campus.  A co-curricular course can only be used in place of a Level II/III elective course that is not specified by a discipline.

• (a) Students may pay for the academic year in one payment.  This must be done by the given deadline in the first semester of the relevant period.

• (b) Students may pay per semester, and this must be done by the stipulated deadline in each semester.

Yes.  Payment plans are available to students through The UWI Bursary Section. 

Please consult the Office of Student Services and Development (OSSD).

Your acceptance letter should indicate this, or you should contact your Student Affairs – Admissions Faculty Representative.  

The difference between registering for Part-Time and registering for Full-Time is:
(a) Part-Time registration means that you have registered for two (2) or three (3) courses; and 
(b) Full-Time registration means that you have registered for four (4) or more courses. 

• Every student is assigned an Academic Advisor on entry to the University whom they should meet at least once every semester for academic counselling. To find out who your Academic Advisor is, check the FST notice board located adjacent to the FST deck.  This information will also be available on the FST website.

• Yes.  Students should complete a Change of Major Form (as shown in the image below) available online on our FST website, and submit it via email to fst@cavehill.uwi.edu. 

• Yes.  However, you will have to wait a year before you are eligible. Please note that Transfer Form (as shown in the image below) can be found online under the Student Resources Section on our FST website.

• They can be downloaded and completed manually or online and returned to the Faculty Office or via email to fst@cavehill.uwi.edu.

• Courses can only be added/dropped at the beginning of the semester during registration. This is done online. Should you experience any problems, you can go to your Head of Department or The Science & Technology Representative in Student Affairs – Admissions – Ms. Annmaria Jordan – Telephone:  417-4114; Email:  annmaria.jordan@cavehill.uwi.edu.

• Change of Majors are submitted by the end of the second week of the first semester.  However, final year students may submit Change of Majors by the end of the second week of the semester in which they are expected to graduate.

• (a) at least thirty (24) credits are from Level I semester courses and 9 credits from Foundation courses;
• (b) at least sixty (60) credits from Levels II and III semester courses;
• (c) have satisfied the requirements for the degree in which he/she is registered; and
• (d) have attained a minimum GPA of 2.0 from Level II and III courses.

• A Final Year student can request permission from the Student Affairs – Examinations Section, through the Dean, to register for one or two courses by ‘Exams Only’.  Exams Only permits the student to complete the course without attending instructional sessions and without submitting coursework.  To be eligible, the student should have been previously registered, attended classes and completed all course work for the said course.   Exams Only may be granted in cases where students were unable to complete the exam on medical grounds or under exceptional circumstances.

• NOTE:  Exams Only will not be granted for a first time course attempt.

• Failed courses are included in the Semester GPA calculations, as well as the Degree GPA calculation; therefore, failing a course serves to lower one’s GPA. If the course is repeated and passed, the grade obtained is also used in the calculation of one’s GPA.

• No, this will not be automatic. A student must submit a Change of Major form to the Dean’s Office for approval by the Dean.

• You should visit the Student Health Clinic to be assessed by the doctor.

• A student is placed on Warning status after a single semester of GPA below 2.0.

• A student is placed on "RTW" status after two consecutive semesters of GPA below 2.0. A student on RTW status must stay out of the University system for one academic year and then apply for re-entry to the University. The application period is normally November to January.

• Yes.  Within the Faculty, there are a number of student clubs/societies our students can join and get involved in.  These include:
• (a) The Cave Hill Environmental Club (CEC)
• (b) The Chemistry Society (ChemSoc)
• (c) The Computer Science Society (CSS)
• (d) FST Physics Club (a recently launched FST Students Club)
• (e) FST Students Committee (via the Guild of Students)
• (f) The Cave Hill Meteorology (MET) Society

Yes.  The Faculty hosts an Annual FST Students Awards Ceremony to honour students who have obtained academic excellence. 

Students must obtain a Semester GPA of 3.60 and above in both semesters. 

Full-Time students must have passed a minimum of 12 Faculty credits in the semester, and Part-Time students must have passed a minimum of 6 credits of Faculty courses in the semester. 

Counselling services are provided by the Students Health Clinic.

• Each course's booklist can be found in the department responsible for delivering the course or on the University Bookshop’s website.

• Lockers are available for rental, through the FST Faculty Office, during each semester, as follows:
  A, B, C & Numbered Lockers – BDS$30.00
  D Lockers – BDS$20.00
  BLUE Lockers – BDS$40.00

  To ensure that the physical distancing protocol is adhered, students are required to fill out the Online rental of Student Lockers Form and submit it via email to fst@cavehill.uwi.edu and claire.cadogan@cavehill.uwi.edu before visiting the FST Faculty Office to make your payment.

  Hours of Rental are:
  Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

• Lab coats are available from the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) Office.

• Depending on your course, your lab manuals will be available at the Departmental Offices. Electronics and Physics Lab manuals are available from the Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP) Departmental Office, and Biological Sciences/Chemistry manuals are available from the Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) Departmental Office.

• This depends on the department offering the course you are doing and the instructions from your Lecturer. For example, CMP courses, such as Computer Science, Electronics, Mathematics and Physics, will usually require that assignments be dropped off at the Computer Science, Mathematics & Physics (CMP) Departmental Office. The same applies to Chemistry, Environmental Science and Biological Science (Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Microbiology) courses at the Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) Departmental Office. However, your Lecturer may decide to give you specific instructions regarding individual assignments. Please note all handouts, booklists, tutorial sheets, etc., will also be collected from the respective Departmental Offices.
