Welcome
On behalf of the members of the Department of History and Philosophy, I wish to extend a warm welcome to all those visiting this website, and to invite you to examine our offerings and come aboard. As the second millennium ends and the third begins, we offer courses that help us understand where we came from, and why things are as they are. With this knowledge, we should be able at least to influence our futures. As the name indicates, the department presently comprises programmes in History and Philosophy.
Our undergraduate programme in History, naturally, is based on understanding our region, so the Caribbean is the core of our curriculum. Supporting this are courses in the history of some of the regions that helped make the Caribbean, notably Europe and Africa, and of our neighbours in the Americas. As well as our country and regional offerings, we have courses in sports history, archeology, and gender studies. Our new undergraduate programme in Philosophy, as well as providing the basic needs for preparation for further study in the field, offers the first course in the region in the Philosophy of the African Diaspora.
For the graduate student, we offer a taught MA programme in History which can be taken in Historical Methodology, African Studies, or Heritage Studies. We also offer research degrees by thesis or dissertation (MPhil, PhD) which are available in Caribbean history only because that is where our resources lie. |
