Dr. Ché Corbin 
Local Director of the Confucius Institute (Barbados)


Dr. Ché Corbin serves as Local Director of the Confucius Institute at UWI Cave Hill Campus and Advisor to the Vice Chancellor, working with colleagues to develop Sino-Caribbean educational and cultural initiatives since he participated in the founding of the Institute in 2015. His eight years living and studying in China, where he completed his degree in clinical Traditional Chinese Medicine in Mandarin at Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, gave him linguistic fluency and deep exposure to Chinese cultural practices that shape his approach to cross-cultural dialogue. As a certified Chinese language instructor with clinical experience in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and Taichi instruction, Dr. Corbin brings together scholarly expertise and authentic cultural understanding to support educational exchange and intercultural scholarship. His work has complemented other UWI initiatives in China collaboration, including the UWI China Institute of Information Technology (UWICIIT). He welcomes opportunities to work with colleagues across disciplines on research partnerships, comparative studies, and interdisciplinary projects that strengthen academic ties between the Caribbean and China while supporting the University’s international engagement goals

Ms. Xu Dan 
Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute (Barbados)


DAN Xu has a robust academic foundation, with degrees in English, Law, and International Comparative Education. Her career includes a significant tenure at the China University of Political Science and Law, where from 2002 to 2018, she managed various international programs, including collaborations with Temple University and summer programs with universities in the USA and Australia. As Vice Dean from July 2018 to July 2023, at the School of International Education, she oversaw international student affairs and cooperative education programs. As Co-Director from August 2023 to August 2025, at Confucius Institute in Bangor University in U.K., she involved in Chinese language & culture teaching actively. Additionally, DAN Xu has participated in study programs worldwide, enhancing her insight into international education. Her expertise and commitment make her a vital asset to the Confucius Institute.



 
 



Talita Thorpe

Mrs. Talita Thorpe is a Barbadian national, and a member of staff at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus. During 16 plus years at the University, she has worked in various departments such as Registry Records Management, Office Management, Chronic Disease Research Centre and the Principal’s Office. Mrs. Thorpe officially joined the Confucius Institute’s team as Stenographer-Clerk in October of 2015. 





 


Samantha R. Alleyne

Ms. Samantha R. Alleyne is a Stenographer Clerk in the Confucius Institute with a Bachelor's of Science from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. Ms. Alleyne has been with the University since 2009. She began in the Student Affairs - Examinations Section, then worked in Student Affairs - Admissions and the Office of Graduate Studies & Research. She joined the Institute in 2018, and assists in administrative and clerical duties, as well as provides support to the Institute's Directors.







 




Tyrone R. Yearwood

Mr. Tyrone R. Yearwood, also known as Ye Tai Long in Chinese, is a Barbadian national who was awarded one of the three 2009 Chinese government scholarships, Mr. Yearwood went on to receive his BA and MA from two of China’s most reputable institutions of higher education. He has also worked extensively in China, in roles ranging from; secondary education, social science research and in large multi-national companies such as FILA, ANTA and PEAK etc. Currently Tyrone is a Chinese teacher at the Confucius Institute at the University of West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus in Barbados. 





 

Wang Fenghe

English name: Shelly
 
WANG Fenghe, also known as Shelly in English, is pursuing her graduate degree in International Chinese Language Education at Minzu University of China. She holds a bachelor's degree from Jiangxi University of Science and Technology. From January 2023 to June 2024, Fenghe has been working as an online Chinese teacher, having taught students from many countries, including the United States, Singapore, Japan, Uzbekistan, and Mauritania. Currently, she is serving as a Chinese language volunteer teacher at the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

Ma Wenxin

English name: Dolly

Ms. Dolly Ma is a Chinese Teacher from  Shandong Province. She graduated from Changchun in 2018 where she majored in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. From August 2018 to June 2019, she was a Chinese volunteer teacher in Mongolia, where she worked in the Mongolian Yucai broadcasting Confucius classroom. She is currently a volunteer local Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute at UWI, Cave Hill campus in Barbados, having worked previously as a volunteer Chinese teacher from October 2019 to October 2020. Dolly is skilled in paper cutting, Chinese stitching, Chinese knots and Chinese cuisine.

Zhang Yanhong

English name: Jane

Zhang Yanhong, associate professor in China University of Political Science & Law, Chinese-English bilingual teacher in journalism-communication; senior school English teacher during 1990-1999;seconded by Chinese Foreign Ministry to the two Chinese Consulates General as a consul in Medan and Milan during 2012-2016;bachelor in English language & literature at Hubei Normal University, master in journalism and doctor in communication both at Wuhan University.



 


Shen Qian

English Name: Kishi

Ms Shen Qian has a solid foundation in the Chinese language. From 2013 to 2022, she studied in the Chinese Language and Literature program at Liaoning University in China, where she obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees successively.  She has extensive teaching experience and profound expertise in delivering courses. She conducted Chinese teaching in Pakistan in 2019 and from 2020 to 2024, she continued to teach Chinese online, with students spanning five continents around the world, covering many countries and regions including South Korea, Japan, China's Hong Kong, Myanmar, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Italy, Monaco, the United States, Canada, Jamaica, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand.  Her classes are lively and vivid, and she excels at imparting knowledge in a relaxed and pleasant way, making the learning process more interesting and engaging.

Yin Xuefeng

English name: Morgan
 
Yin Xuefeng is the teaching coordinator at the Confucious Institute, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados. She holds a Master's degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages, from Beijing Language and Culture University, with a solid academic foundation and multiple research papers published during studies. She has studied abroad in the United States in 2014, and became a Chinese language volunteer teacher in Thailand in 2016. Morgan is fluent in both English and Thai. While possessing years of extensive teaching experience, she served as a state-sponsored teacher and teaching supervisor at Confucius Institutes in Italy and Egypt. She has also served as a Chinese language teacher at Beijing Language and Culture University E-learning Institute for many years, teaching international adult learners with HSK.

Guo Xinyi

English name: Luna

Guo Xinyi, whose English name is Luna, graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Language and Literature and a Master degree in Educational Psychology. From 2021 to 2023, Guo Xinyi served as a volunteer Chinese language teacher in Bulgaria for two years and performed Chinese classical dance on several occasions. Currently, she is a full-time Chinese language teacher at the Confucius Institute University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados. Guo Xinyi is skilled in Chinese classical dance, calligraphy, and sword dance.

LIU Wenjia

English name: Juliet

Wenjia Liu holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in International Chinese Language Education from Beijing Language and Culture University. She has experience in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, having taught Chinese to Italian students and Vietnamese students during her postgraduate and undergraduate studies.  She is certified with the Teacher Qualification Certificate for Chinese Language and currently serves as a Volunteer Teacher of International Chinese Language Education.





 


YANG, Wenqi

 English name: Daisy

Wenqi is a qualified Senior High School Teacher, with a Bachelor of Literature degree in Chinese Language and Literature, from the Jianghan University. She served as a Student Management Assistant at the School of International Education, and ccted as an instructor and practice teacher in the January CET Program.  Ms. Yang has taught international language students, and is currently a Volunteer Teacher.
