ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The former departments of French and Spanish, Linguistics, and Literatures in English were amalgamated to form a single department, the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature, in 1996.  The new Department became the larger of the two departments in the renamed Faculty of Humanities and Education (the other being History and Philosophy).  The Department presently comprises programmes in LinguisticsLiteratures in English, and Modern Languages

Our undergraduate programmes are tailored in their focus to both meet international standards and be relevant to our Caribbean students.  Every year, we host exchange students from foreign universities who are particularly interested in the Caribbean experience while, in turn, our own students may expand their intellectual horizons by spending periods abroad.

Our graduate programmes are tried and tested with experienced teachers and supervisors in most of the areas covered in the undergraduate programme.  In most cases, students are required to follow courses in the early part of the programme with an increasing emphasis on individual research work (reading fields, thesis) towards the end.  Graduate students may avail themselves of many opportunities offered by the School for Graduate Studies to travel, participate in conferences, etc.
