The first point in the Caribbean-led reparatory justice programme jointly championed by The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and CARICOM calls for ‘formal and sincere apology’ as a precondition of healing for descendants of enslaved peoples.

The Barbados National Registry (BNR) a centre of The University of the West Indies, housed at the George Alleyne Chronic Disease research Centre-Barbados has published its latest report on cancer entitled “Cancer in Barbados Report 2022”, which shares the number of cases and cancer types most prevalent in our population from 2013 – 2018, as well as the leading causes of cancer-related deaths from 2013-2021.  

Two UWI medical researchers are sounding the alarm on the rising incidence of cancers in developing states.  Dr. Natalie Greaves, clinician-researcher, lecturer in Public Health at The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus and Co-Chair of the colo-rectal working group for the African Caribbean Cancer Consortium (AC3), and Dr. Cheryl Alexis, haematologist, oncologist and senior lecturer in Clinical haematology also at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill are advocating for increased education towards early identification and treatment of the disease. 

Canada’s relationship with the Caribbean came into sharp focus at the recently held Canada-Caribbean Institute Symposium (CCIS), hosted by The UWI Cave Hill campus.  

The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), hosted by The University of the West Indies (The UWI) was recently announced as a recipient of a sustainability grant from Airbnb, the online marketplace for short-term homestays and experiences.  

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Christine Randle as the new Director of the UWI Press. Ms Randle’s appointment became effective in January, 2023.   

UWItv is pleased to announce the launch of a new series in its programming entitled “UWI’s PhDs, a Conversation in Development.” This special series, highlighting the research and findings of the doctoral research and theses of UWI PhD graduates, was designed and developed in partnership with the University’s School for Graduate Studies and Research. 

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to designate February 17 annually as Global Tourism Resilience Day. The resolution was initiated by Professor Lloyd Waller from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) who also serves as Executive Director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), which is hosted at The UWI Mona Campus.

This declaration from Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles was made during the project launch ceremony for The UWI-CDB Digital Transformation Programme held on Monday, February 6 at the University’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Cave Hill campus has launched a reading program in collaboration with The Barbados National Library Service and the charity Kids in Action, as part of its 60^th Anniversary celebrations. The initiative, “Between the Lines,” seeks to engage children in weekly reading activities to improve their learning skills. Sessions are conducted by a Cave Hill instructor and members of the local teaching community, current and retired. Cave Hill undergraduate students have also volunteered to assist with the sessions.
