Students who undertake a full course load (usually 4 – 5 courses) are considered full-time even though the courses maybe delivered in the evenings and on weekends. 

A part-time student is one who undertakes half of the course load and therefore takes (usually) twice as long as a full-time student to complete the same programme. 

Fees in the table for UGC-funded programmes are the annual full-time fees.  A part-time student in a UGC-funded programme is billed 50% of the full-time rate annually. 

Research students who are employed for more than 12 hours a week must register as part-time.

Applying to a programme means that you are seeking to be enrolled in a programme of interest.  Re-entry applicants (those who had withdrawn from the programme and have been given permission to re-join) are also considered to be applying for enrollment. Registration means that you can enroll to fully participate in courses. This happens after you have been made an offer, and have accepted it. You will now be eligible to register on-line during the published registration period. Applying to a programme does not guarantee that you will be made an offer.  

Yes. If you did not accept the place, or accepted the place offered but did not defer you will need to re-apply. Due to space constraints, your application documents would not have been retained.
 

Yes. You can prioitise and choose a first option and then a second option from the list of programmes.
However, you can accept only ONE offer and you can be enrolled in only ONE programme at a time. 

If you are already in a programme at the UWI or elsewhere you will therefore need to complete your programme of study or withdraw from it before enrolling in a current one.

The minimum requirement for admission to Graduate Certificates, Diplomas or Taught Masters degree programmes is a minimum GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent.

The Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research may allow admission with Pass degrees on a case-by-case basis.

Postgraduate programme fees fall into two categories: (i)  Self – financed programmes and (ii) University Grants Committee (UGC) – Funded programmes. For self-financed programmes, students are responsible for 100% of the cost of their programme. In some instances students of self-financing programmes might obtain a scholorship from a local, regional or internationl organisation. For UGC-funded programmes, students should check with their government to ascertain what portion of fees the government covers. Yes, there is an application fee for all students:
The application fee is BBD$30/USD$15 for citizens of UWI contributing countries.
The application fee is USD$30 (approximately BBD$60) for citizens of non-UWI contributing countries.

The Staff Research Awards and Postgraduate Research Student Awards Funds provide monies to support the research of academic, senior administrative and professional staff as well as research students. The aim is to provide financial assistance to as many members of staff and research students as possible to enable them to adequately carry out their research, and communicate and publish the results of research.

The UWI (Cave Hill) Co-Operative Credit Union scholarships and the De La Rue scholarship provide support for a few students in Taught Masters programmes.

Prospective, newly admitted and continuing students are eligible to apply for scholarships, however, prospective students should note that scholarships can only be awarded after they accept any offer of admission.

Sponsorship refers to the payment of all or some part of a student's fees by a third party.

Sponsorship does not cover University fees which are the responsibility of the student and are payable every semester on registration.

Countries which contribute to the running of the University have various policies governing sponsorship. It is the responsibility of students to check with their Ministry of Education (or designated department) regarding the policy of their country. Letters indicating what portion of fees will be covered by the sponsorship must be submitted direct from the Ministry to the University addressed to ???.

Applicants with relevant work experience must nominate a person with knowledge of their employment activity to act as one of their referees.

You should contact your programme Coordinator, also referred to as an Advisor. Your programme Coordinator knows the full details of your programme and is able to guide you on a semester by semester basis on the choice of courses or related matters. You will be introduced to your programme Coordinator at your formal orientation, prior to registration, if not sooner. If you miss orientation or are unable to contact your programme Coordinator, you may contact the customer service centre for assistance at gradstudies@cavehill.uwi.edu.

Before you select your courses, you are expected to meet with the programme Coordinator to discuss your programme, your individual circumstances, and the recommended courses to take. For new students this meeting will likely take place immediately following your faculty and departmental Orientation during Registration Week.

Registration is the process by which you formally select the courses you will take each semester and pay your fees. This is completed online via CHOL. Your registration is not complete until you have paid your fees or made suitable arrangements with the Bursary through the Student Accounts section.

This is a peer supported system that connects each new student to a Registration Buddy (a trained continuing student). The course of study for a Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Taught Master's degree includes the required courses and supervised research work culminating in the submission of a research paper or project report, except as otherwise stated in approved programme requirements.

The subject of any such research paper or project report shall be recommended by the relevant Head of Department to the Campus Committee for approval not later than two months before the date of submission of the research paper or project report.

The course of study for a DM degree includes both an academic programme and clinical rotations covering all aspects of the discipline over 4 to 7 years depending on the discipline. For all disciplines, it is necessary to be attached to an accredited hospital or to be assigned to clinical duty. All DM candidates are required to complete successfully a research project or case book before the final examination.

A candidate for the MPhil, PhD, Md or professional Doctorate is required to complete the specified number of credits or coursework along with any other work as may be approved by the Campus Committee on the recommendation of the relevant Head of Department, and to pass the appropriate examinations before submitting the thesis:

(A) For students enrolled in an MPhil degree, a minimum of 6 credits should be taken through courses, and for students enrolled in a PhD programme, a minimum of 9 credits should be taken through courses.

(B) For students upgrading from MPhil ro PhD, their MPhil courses will contribute to the course requirements for the PhD.

(C) Students entering either the MPhil or PhD degree already holding a Taught Master's degree in a similar discipline may apply to the Campus Committee for exemption from the course requirements of the research degree.

Students may request to change their postgraduate programme by following the below steps:
1. Write a formal letter to the Head of Department requesting the change. This letter can be sent via email as an attachment.
2. Recommendations on the request are made and then passed to the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
3. The School for Graduate Studies and Research makes a decision based on the recommendations of the Head of  Deapartment.

The University defines cheating as “any act intended to benefit one’s self or another by deceit or fraud.”
 
A student must not directly or indirectly give assistance to any other student, or permit any other student to copy from or otherwise his/her papers, nor accept assistance from any other student or use any other student’s papers.
 
If any candidate is suspected of cheating, or of attempting to cheat, the circumstances will be reported in writing to the Campus Registrar. The Campus Registrar will refer the matter to the Chair of the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research. The Chair shall appoint an Investigating Committee to conduct an investigation. The candidate may be invited for an interview.
 
If the candidate is found guilty of cheating or of attempting to cheat, the Committee may recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies and Research that the candidate be disqualified from the examination concerned, or disqualified from all his/her examinations taken in that examination session; or disqualified from all further examinations of the University for any such period of time as it may determine.
 
A student may appeal to the Senate from the decision of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Appeals against decisions of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research shall be received by the Campus Registrar within two weeks of the date on which the decision is communicated to the student.
 

The University defines "plagiarism" as the unacknowledged and unjustified use of the words, ideas or creations of another, including unjustified unacknowledged quotation and unjustified unattributed borrowing:

• "Level 1 plagiarism" means plagiarism which does not meet the definition of Level 2 plagiarism;
• "Level 2 plagiarism" means plagiarism undertaken with the intention of passing off as original work by the plagiariser work done by another person or persons.

 
These Regulations apply to the presentation of work by a student for evaluation, whether or not for credit, but do not apply to invigilated written examinations. Read more on the University Regulations on Plagiarism.
 

In the case of Graduate Diplomas and Taught Masters degrees which require the submission of a project report or research paper, a distinction is awarded to candidates who achieve an average of 70% or better (Grade A) in the written courses and a mark of 70% or better in the research paper or project report. A student failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of distinction. Failure in a co-requisite course or in a qualifying course shall not exclude the student from receiving a distinction.
 

In the case of programmes assessed entirely by coursework, students must obtain an A grade in at least 70% of the courses and the average mark of all courses must not be less than 70% to qualify for distinction. A student failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of distinction. Failure in a co-requisite course or in a qualifying course shall not exclude the student from receiving distinction.

The award of an MPhil/PhD shall be conferred with high commendation where the Examiners are unanimous in their recommendation that such an award should be made.
 
In the case of Professional Doctorates, candidates must also have attained a Grade A average over the coursework component of the programme, and a candidate failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of high commendation. Failure in a co-requisite course shall not exclude the student from receiving high commendation. High commendation will not normally be awarded to candidates who have exceeded the time limits for registration.

An Official Transcript is stamped, sealed and signed, and the mailing address of the receiving Institution/University must be submitted. A Student Copy is not stamped, sealed nor signed.

Students can select and complete the relevant  request form for Student Status letters here. Please allow 2 – 3 business days for the processing of status letters.  Letter will be sent by email to your mycavehill email address.  If you prefer, letters can be collected from the School for Graduate Studies and Research in the Postgraduate Teaching Complex or the Student Enrolment & Retention Unit in the Leslie Robinson Building on the Main Campus on presentation of  your student ID card. This should be indicated on the form. 

Students who are desirous of having their examination script(s) re-marked, may complete and submit the online request form Request for Remark of Examination . Completed forms should be submitted to the Assistant Registrar, Examination Office. There is a non-refundable fee of BD$130 to have this process completed.

2. Recommendations on the request are made and then forwarded to the School for Graduate Studies and Research.
3. The School for Graduate Studies and Research makes a decision based on the recommendations of the Head of Department.
4. The School for Graduate Studies and Research sends formal communication to the student indicating the decision on the request.

If a student fails to register for courses within the stipulated time, in accordance with the Regulations (1.55) they will be Deemed to have Withdrawn from the university and are no longer considered a student.
 

If a student fails two (2) or more courses in a semester, they will be Required to Withdraw (RTW), in accordance with the Regulations (1.56).

A student who has withdrawn, been deemed to have withdrawn or required to withdraw can be readmitted subject to approval by the Campus Committee. A student can reapply at any time. See Regulations (1.58)

In order to be eligible for the award of a Graduate Certificate, Diploma, Taught Master’s, or Professional Doctorate, a student must have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00. This is applicable to all post graduate students who enter the University from August 2021 and thereafter.
 

Graduation Ceremonies for the University are held in October. The specific date and relevant information about the graduation will be uploaded to the Graduation website by the third week of September.
 

The Examinations Office will officially inform you regarding the completion of your studies.  Furthermore, when the Graduation website is live, there is a status checker that you can use to determine whether you are eligible. You may also speak to your Programme Coordinator for further clarification. 

If you are not attending the graduation ceremony, you can collect your certificate from the Examinations Section on Main Campus.  You will be notified via your campus email address when your certificate is available for collection. 
 

If someone is collecting on your behalf, they should produce a Letter of Authorisation signed by you, along with their photo ID. The letter should be emailed to exams@cavehill.uwi.edu .

Students who reside outside of Barbados will be able to utilise the courier facility, for a fee, to have their certificate delivered to their current home address.

A progress report details the work the student has done, provides an assessment of the work, indicates what remains to be completed and whether the student is on schedule. Each chief Supervisor, or sole Supervisor as the case may be, must submit bianually (no later than January 31 for semester I and June 30 or Semester II) to the Campus Committee through the Head of Department, a report on the work of any candidate placed under his or her supervision. Member of the Committee of Advisors are required to meet at least once per year with the student, and based on their meeting(s). shall submit to the Campus Committee, through the Head of Department, an annual report on the student's progress. Your Supervisor should supply you with a copy of these reports, and you will be invited to verify that you have seen these reports. You can access a copy of the form for reporting here.

The minimum requirement for admission to a DM degree programme is a GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent, unless the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research in any particular case otherwise decides.

The minimum requirement for admission to MPhil programmes is a GPA of 3.0, or an Upper Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent, unless the Campus Committee in any particular case otherwise decides.

Research seminars are part of the requirement in fulfilment of your research degree programme. The seminar is a presentation of your current research work in progress. By the end of the first academic year, a student should be in a position to present some aspect of their research. The research seminar should be seen as an opportunity to share your work and receive  feedback; this process often helps to sharpen your study’s focus, refine your research questions and clarify your methodological choices, thereby ensuring that your work is of the highest standard.  The student and supervisor will together determine the actual date of the research seminar. The event is often organized by the Department.
 
You must satisfactorily complete your seminars well in advance of the submission of your thesis. The upgrade seminar will count as one of the three seminars for the PhD, provided that it is not the last seminar. Seminar requirements are as follows:

ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CONDUCT OF SEMINARS:

1. Both students and supervisor should agree on seminar presentation date
2. At minimum the main supervisor should be present at the seminar
3. The 2nd and 3rd seminar presentations should be about 25-30 minutes in duration
4. Except in extentuating circumstances, one seminar should be done a semester. Where two semesters are conducted in one semester the content should be substantially different from each other
5. An assessment committee should be convened by the Deputy Dean, Research or equivalent to assess the presentation and provide feedback
6. The assessment tool should be made available to the student and assessment committee 5-7 days prior to the seminar

Students enrolled for an MPhil degree must satisfactorily complete at least two research seminars, to be convened by the relevant Head of Department, prior to the submission of their MPhil thesis.

Students enrolled for a PhD or MD degree must satisfactorily complete three such seminars. The upgrade seminar will count as one of the three seminars for the PhD, provided that it is not the last seminar.

Assessment of students' seminars must be included in their Progress Reports. Students enrolled in Professional Doctorates must satisfactorily complete research seminars as specified in Programme requirements.

The minimum requirements for admission to PhD and MD programmes:
(a) Approved graduate degree awarded primarily for research;

(b) Taught Master's degree from the UWI or another approved University, provided that the Master's programme included a research component of at least 25% of the total credit rating and the applicant achieved at least a B+ average or its equivalent;

(c) Approval of an application for upgrade;

(d) Such other qualifications and experience as the Board for Graduate Studies and Research may accept.

The minimum requirements for admission to professional Doctorates and Taught Master's degree in an appropriate field from the UWI or another approved University, having achieved at least a B+ average or its equivalent, and possessing the required experience in the field (as specified in the relevant programme requirements).

The University defines cheating as “any act intended to benefit one’s self or another by deceit or fraud.”
 
A student must not directly or indirectly give assistance to any other student, or permit any other student to copy from or otherwise use his/her papers, nor accept assistance from any other student or use any other student’s papers.
 
If any student is suspected of cheating, or of attempting to cheat, the circumstances will be reported in writing to the Campus Registrar. The Campus Registrar will refer the matter to the Chair of the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research. The Chair shall appoint an Investigating Committee to conduct an investigation. The student may be invited for an interview.
 
If the student is found guilty of cheating or of attempting to cheat, the Committee may recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies and Research that the student be disqualified from the examination concerned, or disqualified from all his/her examinations taken in that examination session; or disqualified from all further examinations of the University for any such period of time as it may determine.
 
A student may appeal to the Senate against the decision of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Appeals against decisions of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research shall be received by the Campus Registrar within two weeks of the date on which the decision is communicated to the student.
 

The award of an MPhil/PhD shall be conferred with high commendation where the Examiners are unanimous in their recommendation that such an award should be made.
 
In the case of Professional Doctorates, candidates must  have attained a Grade A average over the coursework component of the programme, and a candidate failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of high commendation. Failure in a co-requisite course shall not exclude the student from receiving high commendation. High commendation will not normally be awarded to candidates who have exceeded the time limits for registration.
 

A candidate for the MPhil, PhD, MD or Professional Doctorate is required to complete the specified number of credits or coursework along with any other work as may be approved by the Campus Committe on the recommendation of the relevant Head of Department, and to pass the appropriate examinations before submitting the thesis:

(a) For students enrolled in an MPhil degree, a minimum of 6 credits should be taken through courses, and for students enrolled in a PhD programme, a minimum of 9 credits should be taken through courses.

(b) For students upgrading from MPhil to PhD, their MPhil courses will contribute to the course requirements for the PhD.

(c) Students entering either the MPhil or PhD degree already holding a Taught Master's degree in a similar discipline may apply to the Campus Committee for exemption from the course requirements of the research degree.

The course of study for a DM degree includes both an academic programme and clinical rotations covering all aspects of the discipline over 4 to 7 years depending on the discipline. For all disciplines, it is necessary to be attached to an accredited hospital or to be asigned to clinical duty. All DM candidates are required to complete successfully a research project or case book before the final examination.

The course of study for a Graduate Certificate, Diploma or Taught Master's degree includes the required courses and supervised research work culminating in the submission of a research paper or project report, except as otherwise stated in approved programme requirements.

The subject of any such research paper or project report shall be recommended by the relevant Head of Department to the Campus Committee for approval not later than two months before the date of submission of the research paper or project report.
 

The School for Graduate Studies and Research has implemented a Grade Point Average (GPA) system for graduate certificates, diplomas, taught master’s and professional doctorate programmes. The University defines "plagiarism" as the unacknowledged and unjustified use of the words, ideas or creations of another, including unjustified unacknowledged quotation and unjustified unattributed borrowing:

• "Level 1 plagiarism" means plagiarism which does not meet the definition of Level 2 plagiarism;
• "Level 2 plagiarism" means plagiarism undertaken with the intention of passing off as original work by the plagiariser, work done by another person or persons.

These Regulations apply to the presentation of work by a student for evaluation, whether or not for credit, but do not apply to invigilated written examinations. Read more on the University Regulations on Plagiarism.
