Current research being undertaken by CERC
- School Factors that Influence Student Achievement
An investigation to seek to identify school-related factors that correlate with student achievement. Data about a sample of schools across the region will be collected from students, school leaders, teachers, and parents by surveys, interviewing and observation and from school records. These data will be analysed at the school level to ascertain correlates of student performance and achievement.
- Prevalence of Children with SEN in Caribbean Schools
Students’ academic achievement may be seriously affected by undiagnosed conditions that impede their progress. By collecting data from classroom teachers, this study seeks to explore the prevalence and diversity of students who exhibit signs and symptoms that may indicate conditions that need attention.
- Technology in Education: Prevalence and Practices
Technology has been on the education landscape since the late 1990s and there have been mixed reactions to its use in teaching and learning. The experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic saw this resource playing a major role in schooling. This investigation seeks to ascertain what technology is being used in schools and how. It also seeks to determine the influence of technology on student achievement.
- The Impact of the Disasters on Teaching and Student Learning in Caribbean Schools
Over the past few years, the region has experienced an increase of disasters that interrupted schooling as we know it: violent weather systems, eruption of volcanoes, flooding, and health issues (e.g., outbreaks of dengue and Zika, and of course, the COVID-19 pandemic). These events are of the nature to have effects on students. This investigation seeks to understand the impact of such events on students and the concomitant effects on their academic achievement.
- Student Wellbeing and Academic Achievement
There is a growing concern in the region about the increase in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children, even those of very young ages. This research seeks to understand the impact of this increase in NCDs on student learning and overall achievement.
