The Academic Advisor is there to offer guidance in relation to your academic career at UWI. Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor from a member of faculty within their discipline, however during registration you may be given advice by another member of faculty since there are a lot of students seeking guidance during that period. 

The name of your Academic Advisor is posted on your CHOL account. However, if you do not see a name there, contact the Cave Hill School of Business and Management (CHSBM) at graduatechsbm@cavehill.uwi.edu (graduate students) or undergraduatechsbm@cavehill.uwi.edu (undergraduate students) to request the name of the Advisor.  An email address for your Advisor can be found on the Faculty and Staff webpage. 
 

It is recommended that you see you Academic Advisor at least once per semester.  You should especially do so at the beginning of the semester to plan your courses for the academic year.

Yes you may. If you wish to change your Academic Advisor, visit the office from which your programme is administered; whether it be the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management Building or the Department of Management Studies Building on Main Campus.

Course Types
Undergraduate degrees in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management may comprise of:

1. Foundation Courses -  these are  University courses which are designed to engender sensitivity to Caribbean culture, ideologies and realities. These are compulsory for all undergraduate students in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management unless an exemption is granted by the UWI due to previous certification in an equivalent course.  Please go to the FAQ entitled 'Foundation Courses and the New Language Policy' for further information. 
2. Core Courses - these are fundamental to your area of study and must be completed. No other courses can be substituted.   
3. Options – selections from lists of required courses. For example, you may be given a list of four (4) options from which you are required to choose two (2).
4. Electives -   these are approved courses that can be selected from within the Cave Hill School of Business and Management or from any other department/school at the Cave Hill Campus. Typically you will be approved to take a course as an elective if the number in the course code begins with 2 or 3.  For example MKTG 2001 or MKTG 3002.  Students are encouraged to take courses in other departments and faculties to broaden their educational experience and knowledge base as long as they have the prerequisites. 

FULL-TIME students register for ten (10) courses per academic year (Aug-May) i.e. 5 courses in semester I and 5 courses in semester II.  To enter the full-time Programme, your letter of offer to UWI should indicate acceptance into the 3-year programme (full matriculation). Please note that students who are in full-time employment are NOT permitted to register full-time.

PART-TIME students register for five (5) courses per academic year (Aug-May) i.e. 3 courses in semester I and 2 courses in semester II OR vice versa. To enter the part-time Programme, your letter of offer should indicate acceptance into the 4-year programme (lower level matriculation). Students with lower level matriculation are not permitted to register full time until they have successfully completed 24 credits. 

Please note that registration is done on a semester by semester basis. Therefore, you can only register for semester I courses in August/September and semester II courses in January/February.
 

You may be eligible for Advanced Standing and/or Course Exemptions, depending on past educational achievements.

Please note that Exemptions/Advanced Standing for which you are eligible may already be entered on your student academic record/transcript on CHOL.  However it is your responsibility to check to ensure that your academic record is complete. If you believe that you are eligible for an exemption which is not recorded on your student academic record, please visit the Faculty of Social Sciences Office or email the inquiry to socsci@cavehill.uwi.edu.

Students are normally required to complete three (3) Foundation courses as part of their degree programme in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management.
These Foundation Courses are:

1. MGMT1000 Introduction to Information Technology Literacy
2. FOUN1006 Exposition for Academic Purposes OR FOUN1008 An Introduction to Professional Writing.
3. FOUN1101 Caribbean Civilisation OR FOUN1201 Science, Medicine and Technology OR a Foreign Language course from the Faculty of Humanities. 

 
The Foreign Language Policy from Academic Year 2022-2023
To ensure the global competitiveness of our graduates, the UWI is making foreign language certification mandatory.

From Academic Year 2022-2023, new entrants are REQUIRED to do the Foreign Language option instead of FOUN1101 Caribbean Civilisation or FOUN1201 Science, Medicine and Technology, unless they have foreign language certification (see below).

If students have previously completed a course which qualifies them for EXEMPTION from FOUN1101 Caribbean Civilisation or FOUN1201 Science, Medicine and Technology, but have no prior foreign language certification, they will STILL BE REQUIRED to take the Foreign Language.
 
Accepted Foreign Language Certification 

1. CSEC General Proficiency Pass (Grades 1-3) in French, Spanish or Portuguese.
2. Language Certification from CAPE (Grades I to V). 
3. Any other certification not mentioned can be presented to the Office of the Faculty of Social Sciences for consideration.          

 
 
 
 
 

Having proficiency in Mathematics and English is necessary for the successful completion of a degree at the UWI.

English Proficiency
Applicants to the Cave Hill School of Business and Management who do not have at minimum a Grade 1 in CSEC English Language (General Proficiency) will have to take the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) in the summer before entering university. 

Students who miss the ELPT or fail to pass this test will be required to take FOUN0100 - Fundamentals of Written English - a preliminary English course.

Proof of proficiency in English (either through prior qualification, a pass in the ELPT or a pass in FOUN0100-Fundamentals of Written English) is required to register for FOUN1008 - An Introduction to Professional Writing or FOUN1006 - Exposition for Academic Purposes. FOUN1008 and FOUN1006 are university Foundation courses . Foundation courses are compulsory for all undergraduate students in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management, unless exempted due to prior qualification in an approved equivalent course.

Mathematics Proficiency
Applicants who do not have at minimum Grade 1 or Grade 2 in CSEC Mathematics (General Proficiency) will have to take the Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) in the summer before entering university.

Students who miss the MPT or fail to achieve a pass in the test will be advised to register for ECON0101- Preliminary Mathematics for Social Sciences. Currently, the Department of Economics is giving students the opportunity to retake the MPT in the January following their entrance into UWI. However, availability of the January test is NOT guaranteed. 

Proof of proficiency in Mathematics ( either through prior qualification, a pass in the MPT, or a pass in ECON0101 - Preliminary Mathematics for Social Sciences) is required to register for ECON 1003 - Introduction to Mathematics for Social Sciences and ECON 1005 - Introduction to Statistics.

Key Takeaways

Students who have to take FOUN0100 or ECON0101 will complete eleven (11) courses at Level 1 instead of ten (10). Those students who have to take both preliminary courses have to complete (12) courses at Level 1.  If required, students are advised to take FOUN0100 and/or ECON0101 during their first year at UWI. 

Please note that students are expected to cover the course fee for both FOUN0100 and ECON0101, as these are not government-sponsored courses.

A prerequisite is a course that must be taken before the course you are seeking to take.  For example, if MKTG 3001 has MKTG 2001 as a prerequisite, then MKTG 2001 must be taken and passed before you can take MKTG 3001.  The prerequisites for all undergraduate courses in the Cave Hill School of Business and Management can be viewed at the Prerequisites Brochure.

Undergraduate students at UWI Cave Hill are allowed to take one (1) co-curricular course as part of their degree programme.  These co-curricular courses are offered by the Office of Student Services (OSS).  The list of courses offered in any semester can be found at the OSS website at https://www.cavehill.uwi.edu/studentservices/academic-support/co-curricular-credits.aspx .

Please note that Co-curricular course credits are not included in the calculation of your overall GPA.  These are ‘pass’ or ’fail’ courses.
 
 

An override is the term used to describe the granting of permission by  the university administration to take a course which the online registration system did not allow the student to register for. 

The online system will prevent students from registering for courses for several reasons:  These include: 
(a) the student has not passed the course prerequisite(s)
(b) the time slot for the course is clashing with that of another course which the student has already registered for
(c) there is a Level Restriction. This means that the student has to  either reach a certain level in their degree programme; pass a certain number of courses or pass courses of a certain type before they qualify to register for the course in question.  

When a Faculty member or a member of the Administrative Staff has advised that you apply for an override, the online application can be made at https://overrides.cavehill.uwi.edu/login/

It is advised that time be taken to detail the reason why the override is being sought on the online application to enhance the possibility of permission being granted.

If the override is approved, then the student is permitted to self-register for the course.

Permission must be granted to allow a full-time student to do a sixth course in any given semester.  There is a form to be completed if you are requesting permission to do a sixth course as a full-time student.  That form is available on our Faculty Student Resources page.     
 
 

Students are allowed to do a maximum of three 3-credit courses during the summer.  Ideally, you should aim to take no more than two courses during any given summer, given the short length and compact nature of the summer semester. 

E learning is an online resource which allows you to access the course notes, assignments, quizzes, forums and Zoom classroom for each of the courses that you have registered for in a particular semester.

Plagiarism is using someone else’s ideas, results or words without giving the necessary credit. In the university environment, plagiarism typically occurs when students are preparing written or oral assignments, and plagiarised material can be taken from lecture notes, books, journals, magazines, newspapers, web sites, photographs, charts, graphs, drawings, statistics, interviews and television programmes; in essence all created sources.

Every time that you use ideas (expressed in your own words) or words/direct quotes that appear in a document written by someone else, you must formally reference that work (document), even if it is not something that has been published.
 
Citing Ideas/Opinions/Statistics/Findings
If you paraphrase (put into your own words) another person's ideas, you must still provide a reference citation. Be careful that your paraphrasing is not so close to the original that it would be better to simply use a direct quotation with quotation marks. When citing an idea/opinion/statistic/finding that you have paraphrased, you are required to attach the person’s last name and the year of the publication that you took the idea/opinion/statistic from next to the idea.

Idea : Consumer Behaviour is a complex and ever changing (Smith, 2016).  Smith is the person this idea came from and it came from a document that Smith published in 2016.  

This citation (Smith, 2016) occurs within the body of your assignment and then the full reference ( using either the Chicago or the Harvard Referencing system) must appear in your bibliography or references list.  Chicago and Harvard are the citation systems approved for the Faculty of Social Sciences.  Pay attention to the guide for citing electronic sources since these are becoming increasingly prevalent in student assignments.

Citing Words/Direct Quotes
If you are citing an author ad verbatim / word for word you are required to put those words in quotation marks, and at the end of the direct quote you are required to give the author’s name, year of publication and the page that the direct quote came from.

Direct Quote: ‘Consumer behaviour is a dynamic phenomenon, and even more so during the millennial generation’ (Smith, 2016: 45).

Leaving off quotation marks and page number are a significant error, even if you give the name and year and page number at the end of the sentence or passage. 

It is poor academic practice to structure your assignment using a string of direct quotes, even if they are correctly cited.  Good students are able to read, synthesize and paraphrase.

The full reference for direct quotes must also appear in the bibliography/reference list a the end of your assignment.

Common Knowledge

Citing information that is common knowledge is generally not required
Examples of common knowledge include:

• Rihanna is Barbados’ newest national hero
• The chemical formula for water is H2O.
• Barbados is 45 minutes away from Trinidad by air.
• The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philemon in the Bible

Some ways to avoid plagiarism:

• Keep detailed records of your research; document your sources as you do your research.
• Cite all quotations.
• Cite all sources you have either summarized or paraphrased.
• Cite ideas that you have employed.
• Cite information from sources such as speeches, interviews, photographs, films, laboratory procedures, software programs, musical or dramatic compositions, audio or visual media, works of art or architecture, maps, statistical tables, Web pages, electronic databases or any other source that was created by someone else.
• If you feel uncomfortable about the integrity of your assignment and want to identify areas where you may need to properly cite or paraphrase, check your assignment with Turnitin, a programme which checks your document against published sources to determine the percentage of plagiarised material.  When running your document through Turnitin do not include your bibliography, as this will significantly elevate your plagiarism percentage.
• The penalty for plagiarism is often severe. If you are unsure or confused about documenting an assignment, it is your responsibility to ask your Lecturer or the Librarian at the Sidney Martin Library.  Good discussions on academic integrity and plagiarism can also be found online.

If you missed an exam, you can retake it at the next available sitting. You would need to re-register for the course at the next offering.  If you missed an examination for medical reasons, you should visit the Student Health Clinic. Coursework may be carried forward if the student missed an examination for medical reasons. The request for coursework to be carried forward must be approved by the Faculty of Social Sciences Office, under the direction of the Student Health Clinic.

Medical leave during the semester or during the examination period must be approved by the Student Health Clinic, therefore any paperwork from your private doctor/medical facility must be submitted to the Student Health Clinic for consideration.  All registered students should register with the Clinic in order to access the services available.
 

 

A request for a discussion (where you go through the script with your lecturer) or remark (grade can be changed) must be made to the Examinations Section. Discussions are free of charge and can only be requested if you have failed the course. Remarks can be requested if you have failed the course or if you are dissatisfied with the final grade/mark. There is a fee attached to the remark, and there is a stipulated time-frame published by the Examinations Section for requesting a discussion or a remark. 
 

A final year student can request permission from the Examinations Section, through the Dean to register for one or two courses by ‘exams only’.  Exams Only permits the student to complete the course without attending instructional sessions and without submitting coursework.  Exams Only typically applies where students either failed the final examination or did not take it because of medical reasons or exceptional circumstances.  To be eligible, the student should have been previously done the course and completed all of the coursework. Exams Only will not be granted for a first time course attempt.

Up to two orals are offered to final year students who are pending graduation.  Orals are offered for courses that the student previously failed with a mark of 45 or higher. Orals are optional.  The student can choose to retake the course at the next available semester. 

Students are required to prepare for orals as they do for written examinations.

Academic standing refers to your performance in any given semester. Performance is determined by your GPA at the end of a semester. In order to be in good academic standing your GPA must be 2.00 or higher.



 

At the end of each semester when your grades are posted to your transcript, your academic standing is noted above the courses taken (see highlighted section in the example below)

If after the end of a semester, your results come back and your standing changes from “Good Standing” to “Academic Warning” you should seek assistance from your Advisor. Students who are on Academic Warning may be asked to come in for counselling and a registration code before they are allowed to register for the new semester. This allows the student to talk through challenges with an Advisor/Faculty Member.

A student who for good reason wishes to be absent from an academic programme for a semester or an academic year must apply for formal Leave of Absence through the Dean’s Office. The leave of absence request form may be downloaded from the Student Resources webpage.

Leave of Absence may be granted for one semester or for an academic year. Leave of Absence, however, will not be granted for more than two consecutive academic years, or in the first year of the programme. A student who wishes to deregister from all courses in the first year of their programme must request deferral until either the next semester or the next academic year.

Applications for leave of absence must be made no later than the third week of the official registration period of the relevant semester.

If you are unable to continue in your programme for at least two academic years, you should write a letter to the Dean indicating that you wish to voluntarily withdraw from the programme.  If you need to discontinue studies for up to one year, with plans of resumption following, it is recommended that you apply for leave of absence for the period.

A “warning” status reflects poor academic performance (i.e. the receipt of a term GPA of 1.99 or less). This should be taken seriously and the student should seek counsel from his/her academic advisor. If such poor performance is maintained by a student for the following semester, the student will be asked to withdraw from the UWI.

If after the end of a semester, your results come back and your standing changes from “Good Standing” to “Academic Warning” you should seek assistance from your Advisor. Students who are on Academic Warning may be asked to come in for counselling and a registration code before they are allowed to register for the new semester. No sooner than one (1) year after the date of withdrawal can you reapply for admission. A student who is Required to Withdraw (RTW) may request a meeting with the Dean, who can examine the case and decide whether the RTW requirement can be waived.

All students wishing to transfer to another faculty must apply to the programme of their choice. The application form is available on the Student Affairs website and should be completed in triplicate. 
 

A four-year programme indicates acceptance into part-time studies.  You may switch to full-time studies only after successfully completing 24 credits of courses at Level I.

Yes, full-time students may opt to register part time i.e. 5-6 courses in the academic year.
 

Students who opt to complete part of their university degree abroad at a partner institution will reap several benefits.  They are able to experience new cultures and educational environments; explore new avenues for research and learning; and build lifelong networks and friendships that can enhance their career prospects. 

Undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 up to the date of application to study abroad.  The final semester of your programme must be spent at Cave Hill. 

Graduate students are required to obtain written permission from their Departmental Head and Dean which must be submitted to the Campus Coordinator, School for Graduate Studies and Research for final approval before they contact the International Office. Research students must identify a supervisor at their proposed host institution and submit a research proposal.

Financing
UWI students who go on study abroad pay their tuition to UWI as normal., though they spend the semester/academic year overseas.  However, they will be personally responsible for covering the cost of travel, food and accommdation while away on study abroad.

You are required to make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to go through the courses available and select those which will fit into your UWI academic programme.  The courses selected must be approved by your Head of Department and Dean on your application form.

Students interested in studying abroad are normally required to contact the university  that they wish to attend to secure the course outlines for the courses they plan to take while overseas.  These course outlines are assessed by UWI Faculty to determine if the courses are UWI equivalents. 

You will be awarded the letter grade achieved in the course at the host university, and the UWI credits which correspond to that letter grade.
