About the Programme

Gain the knowledge you need to prepare you for senior positions in finance! An MSc. Finance degree will equip you with the tools to manage personal and corporate investment portfolios as well as navigate local, regional and international financial markets.

What Will I Study?

  • Strategies and procedures for maximising after-tax returns.
  • How organisations manage risk and investments across markets.
  • Techniques for performing financial analysis and modelling.
  • Real time stock market and investment data using Bloomberg- an analytics and trading tool. Bloomberg is a gateway to practical, real time investment experience. 
  • Challenges and opportunities associated with equity and fixed income securities in the financial markets.
  • The foreign exchange market, international transactions and treasury management.
  • The intricacies of trade blocs and their implications for trade finance and financial markets. 

Facilities and Resources

Graduate Studies Lab - This new Graduate Studies Lab equips students with hands-on experience in using data analytic and research tools and technologies to improve the practical experience and the real-world feel of their programme curriculum. The Lab is equipped with several Bloomberg terminals. 

Textbook Package - Textbooks (printed or electronic) are provided for all registered students. This fee is included in the programme cost, and students are allowed to keep all of the course materials on completion of the course of study.

Research

Our Faculty conducts research in a wide cross-section of areas related to Accounting and Finance. These areas include ethics, taxation and accounting information systems.
  
Professor C. Justin Robinson has published extensively on banking, finance and investments in the emerging market context. His research included investigations on stock price behaviour, dividend policy and monetary integration in the Caribbean. Professor Robinson also serves on the Board of Directors for the Central Bank of Barbados.

Additional Information

The MSc. Finance programme aligns itself with the content of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute in an effort to better prepare students to succeed in this evolving field. More importantly, the MSc. Finance programme includes a significant portion of the CFA Program’s Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) in its curriculum.

I chose to study at UWI once again (having graduated from the St. Augustine Campus in 2004) because I knew that I wanted to pursue my masters in a cost-effective way, and that I did not want to go far from home. At the time my kids were six (6) and two (2) years old.
 
In addition, I liked the fact that the MSc. courses cover a wide range of subjects; which makes graduates eligible to work in many fields. I also liked the fact that the course started in January. A friend sent me the advertisement in September; and between September and December, I was able to secure funding and pursue the course from January of the following year. That the books and laptop were included in the fees and were available at the bookshop was also an advantage.

The quality and interest of the lecturers at UWI enhanced the experience. The lectures were helpful and delivered the course material in an interesting and uniquely Caribbean manner. I am certainly happy that the university has a good ranking internationally. I believe more needs to be done to educate persons within the region of that fact. 
 
Studying at UWI increased my marketability and assisted me in moving up within the public service. In addition, the MSc programme prepared me for the rigours of my current position which requires a lot of research and the preparation of papers and presentations for diverse audiences. Reading for the MSc programme at UWI also boosted confidence, especially with respect to public speaking.
 
I have made some lifetime friends among the staff and students to the point that I consider Barbados to be like a second home; which I have visited almost annually over the past 10 years. I would recommend persons study in the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management. Programme Fees (as at August 2023)  = BDS $ 30,000. 
University Registration Fees (as at August 2023) = BDS $ 540 per semester:
University fees comprise of Guild and Amenities Fees. They are not charged in the summer semester.
Please note that fees may be adjusted for academic year 2023-2024. 

For Degreed Applicants

(i) A Bachelor’s Degree from a university or college acceptable to the University of the West Indies, with at least Lower Second Class Honours.

(ii) Students with 'Pass' degrees will be considered on the following conditions:
(a) they are currently working in the field, or have adequate work experience, related to the programme, and
(b) they are successful at an interview conducted by the Entrance Committee within the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management.

(iii) Two letters of recommendation.
 
For Non-Degreed Applicants
 
Many individuals working in Finance have expressed a desire to obtain advanced training. While these individuals have many years of practical experience, they tend to hold mainly certificates, diplomas or other professional designations related to their job. It is expected that the number of students entering the programme through this route will be restricted to a maximum of 25 percent of the cohort in any given year.

The entry criteria for these students would therefore be: 
  1. Technical certificates, diplomas or professional designations that can be assessed by the University of the West Indies.
  2. At least five years’ experience in a related field at a Supervisory or higher level.
  3. A successful interview conducted by a selected panel determined by the Campus Committee on Graduate Studies and the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management.
  4. Two strong letters of recommendation.
