About the Programme

Is achieving the ACCA professional accounting designation one of your career goals? Then, accomplish two feats in one with our MSc. Accounting and Finance (ACCA Embedded) degree! This purpose-built programme allows students to secure a postgraduate degree in Accounting and Finance and a professional ACCA designation at the same time.

Graduates of this programme will master international accounting standards and the discipline of financial accounting, while learning how real-world organisations develop and implement accounting and financial strategies.

What Will I Study?

  • Contemporary issues in accounting and finance through the application of research-led learning  techniques.
  • The strategic planning and control models used to plan and monitor organisational performance.
  • How to analyse, evaluate and conclude the assurance engagement and other audit issues in the context of best practice and current developments.
  • The financial skills, tools and techniques needed to advise management and/or clients on complex financial management issues.
  • The role of international financial institutions in the financial management of multinationals.

Facilities and Resources

Textbook Package - Textbooks (printed or electronic) are provided for all registered students. This fee is included in the programme cost, and students are allowed to keep all of the course materials on completion of the course of study.

Research

Our Faculty conducts research in a wide cross-section of areas related to Accounting and Finance. These areas include ethics, taxation and accounting information systems.
  
Professor C. Justin Robinson has published extensively on banking, finance and investments in the emerging market context. His research included investigations on stock price behaviour, dividend policy and monetary integration in the Caribbean. Professor Robinson also serves on the Board of Directors for the Central Bank of Barbados.

Additional Information

The MSc. Accounting and Finance (ACCA Embedded) programme was designed in collaboration with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Students enrolled in the programme take their strategic professional-level (ACCA) examinations alongside their university examinations.

Programme Fees (as at August 2023)  = BDS $ 30,000
University Registration Fees (as at August 2023) = BDS $540 per semester:
University fees comprise of Guild and Amenities Fees. They are not charged in the summer semester.
Please note that fees may be adjusted for academic year 2023-2024

i. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a university or college acceptable to the University of the West Indies, with at least Second Class honours. 

Students are expected to have a good grounding in a business subject such as management, marketing, finance, or economics. 

Students with 'Pass' degrees will be considered on the following conditions:
(a) they are currently working in a business, accounting or finance related field, and
(b) they are successful at an interview conducted by the entrance committee within the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management.

ii. Two letters of recommendation

iii. Successful completion of all 9 of ACCA Applied Knowledge & Applied Skills papers (or their equivalent) OR

iv. Successful completion of all 9 of ACCA Applied Knowledge & Applied Skills papers (or their equivalent) plus any ACCA EPSM, SBL or SBR OR

v. Current ACCA membership in good standing; completed ACCA Applied Knowledge, Skills and Strategic Professional Essentials plus two Strategic Options (or their equivalent as approved by ACCA). Students must then complete EPSM.

For Non-Degreed Applicants

The Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management is considering opening its doors to a restricted number of non- degreed individuals working in the private sector who have a desire to obtain advanced training in Accounting and Finance. It is expected that the number of students entering the programme through this route would be highly restricted and should represent no more than 25 percent of the cohort in any given year. Students entering through this route will be required to undertake a preliminary year of study. The entry criteria for these students would therefore be:

i. Successful completion of all ACCA foundation courses.

ii. Technical certificates or diplomas that can be assessed by the University of the West Indies.

iii. Five years’ experience in accounting, finance or a business-related field.

iv. They are successful at an interview conducted by a select panel determined by the Campus Committee on Graduate Studies and the Sagicor Cave Hill School of Business and Management.

v. Two letters of recommendation.
