Programme Overview

Strategic Finance: Planning Beyond the Budget

Markets shift faster than planning cycles. Capital costs fluctuate without warning. Supply chains, currencies, interest rates, regulation, and customer demand can reshape financial assumptions almost overnight. In this environment, competitive advantage belongs to organisations that can anticipate change before it appears in the financial statements.

Financial Planning and Analysis has become one of the most strategically important functions in modern organisations. No longer confined to budgeting and reporting, today’s FP&A professionals are expected to interpret uncertainty, evaluate strategic options, challenge assumptions, and provide leadership with the financial intelligence needed to make confident decisions in rapidly changing environments.

The Financial Planning and Analysis programme develops the capabilities required to move finance from retrospective reporting to strategic foresight. Participants will strengthen their expertise in financial modelling, forecasting, scenario planning, business performance analysis, and decision support while learning to transform complex financial information into actionable business insight that influences executive decision-making.

Built around the globally recognised competency framework underpinning the AFP Financial Planning & Analysis Professional (FPAC) credential, the programme integrates advanced financial analysis with business strategy, risk management, and executive communication. Participants will develop practical tools for building driver-based forecasts, evaluating strategic alternatives, modelling uncertainty, and communicating recommendations that enable organisations to respond with agility and confidence.

Recognising the realities of operating within Caribbean and other small open economies, the programme examines planning and forecasting through the lens of foreign exchange constraints, inflation, concentrated markets, tourism dependency, commodity cycles, and economic volatility. Through applied case studies and practical exercises, participants will strengthen their ability to support organisational resilience while creating long-term strategic value.

Programme  Objectives

Upon completion of this programme, participants will be able to:

  •  Build a driver-based rolling forecast that can be updated quickly as assumptions change.
  • Conduct variance and price-volume-mix analysis and translate the result into a clear recommendation.
  •  Design scenario and sensitivity models that quantify the impact of currency, rate and demand shocks.
  •  Evaluate a capital investment using NPV, DCF and ROI and produce a defensible go / no-go recommendation.
  •  Assess and quantify financial risks – foreign-exchange, liquidity and interest-rate – relevant to a Caribbean operating context.
  •  Map the drivers of an integrated business plan that links revenue, cost, headcount and cash.
  •  Produce a board-ready financial narrative and presentation tailored to a specific decision and audience.
  •  Develop a 90-day plan to embed faster, more strategic FP&A practice in their own organisation.

Programme Curriculum

Financial Acumen and the Modern FP&A Operating Model

  • Positioning FP&A as a forward-looking function, not a backward-looking reporting line.
  •  Applying the core financial concepts the FPAC standard demands: Cost behaviour, margins, cost of capital and the time value of money.
  •  Comparing budgeting approaches – annual, zero-based and rolling forecasts – and choosing the right one for volatility.
  •  Reading the macro signals that move Caribbean plans: Exchange rates, inflation, GDP and interest-rate direction.
  •  Mapping your FP&A technology stack and identifying the manual work that should be automated first.

Forecasting, Modelling and Analytics

  •  Building a driver-based revenue, expense and headcount forecast from the ground up.
  •  Running variance and price-volume-mix analysis to explain what really moved the result.
  •  Projecting the linked financial statements – P&L, cash flow and balance sheet – as one model.
  •  Applying model-integrity discipline: Cross-footing, reasonableness testing and version control.
  •  Using AI and automation to accelerate the build while keeping the assumptions under your control.

Scenario Planning, Risk and Integrated Business Planning

  •  Designing what-if scenarios and sensitivity analyses around the variables that matter most.
  •  Quantifying foreign-exchange, liquidity and interest-rate risk in a constrained-currency environment.
  •  Pressure-testing cash runway and covenant headroom under a downside case.
  •  Connecting revenue, cost, capacity, headcount and cash into a single integrated business plan.
  •  Prioritising capital allocation when funding is scarce and the cost of capital is high.

Business Partnering, Storytelling and Decision Influence

  •  Defining financial and non-financial KPIs that actually drive behaviour.
  •  Engaging stakeholders across the business to gather better inputs and challenge assumptions.
  •  Turning analysis into a clear, decision-led narrative using data-storytelling techniques.
  •  Tailoring the same numbers for an analyst, an executive and a board.
  •  Presenting and defending a capstone recommendation under live questioning.

How You Will Learn

This is a hands-on programme. You will learn through:

  •  Spreadsheet model clinics where you build the deliverables step by step.
  •  A re-forecasting simulation that forces you to react as conditions change.
  •  Structured peer challenge of your assumptions and conclusions.
  •  Guidance from practitioners who plan and analyse in real Caribbean and international finance functions.
  •  Applied assessment.

Benefits for the Organisation

What you and your organisation gain:

  •  Re-forecast in days, not weeks, when conditions change – and stop defending a budget that reality has already overtaken.
  •  Convert raw data into decisions, freeing your team from the data-gathering that consumes most FP&A time today.
  •  Stress-test cash, currency and margin before a shock hits, not after.
  •  Use AI and automation as a finance co-pilot while keeping ownership of the assumptions and the judgement.
  • Win a real seat at the decision table by turning numbers into a story leaders act on.
  •  Benchmark your skills against the global FPAC competency standard and strengthen your certification readiness.
  •  Walk away with reusable models, templates and tools.
