About the Programme

The Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is a professional degree, normally intended for practitioners in the field of education. This programme aims at building and improving the skills of teachers with an Associate Degree in Education or a Teaching Certificate as well as persons wishing to start in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education.

Applicants already possessing an Associate Degree in Education or a Teaching Certificate in Education from a reputable Teacher Training Institution will be eligible for matriculation into Level II of the B.Ed. programme and therefore complete only 20 courses (in a minimum of two years on a full-time basis).

The B.Ed. programme offers specialisations in nine (9) content areas:

  4. Language Arts/Literacy Education
  5. Mathematics Education
  6. Science Education
  7. Social Studies Education
  8. Special Needs Education
  9. Testing, Measurement, and Evaluation

Research

Our faculty conducts research in all areas of Education. We focus on educational issues of interest across the world, with a special interest in the situations facing education in the Caribbean islands.

In order to qualify for the B.Ed. degree a student must fulfill the requirements for either the 60 credit programme or the 90 credit programme as deemed applicable.
  • Students eligible for entry into the 60 Credit programme are deemed to have already met the requirements for Level I.
  • Students who are eligible for entry into the 90 credit programme must complete all courses required for Levels I, II, and III.

Programme Details

For this programme, students must take:

Twenty (20) to Thirty (30) courses approved by the Faculty of Humanities & Education. In addition to specialist courses in the content area selected, all students complete Education Foundation courses such as:

  • Introduction to Human Development
  • Social Foundations of Education
  • Introduction to Educational Psychology
  • Introduction to Curriculum, Theory, Planning and Practice
  • Media and Technology in Education
  • Principles of Social Psychology
  • Issues in Teacher Education
  • The Social Context of Education

  • A minimum of five (5) passes in CSEC General Proficiency Grade I, II or Grade III (Grade III if done after 1998], or GCE O’ Levels at least Grade C, or BGCSE examinations including English and one of the following: a Foreign Language, Mathematics, Geography, or an approved Science subject;
  • For the B.Ed. Programme: a Teachers’ College Diploma or a Teachers’ College Certificate.
  • The entry requirements of the particular academic department in which they propose to take courses

NB: For entry to the B.Ed (Early Childhood Care and Education), teacher training is NOT required.
