About the Programme

Discover the languages of the Caribbean region! 
 
Apply to do an interdisciplinary master’s degree in Caribbean Studies at the Cave Hill Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) in Barbados, and become an expert on Caribbean culture, language and literature. 

What Will I Study?

You will discover: 
  • An integrated approach to the French-, Spanish- and English-official Caribbean 
  • The role of popular and visual culture in the region 
  • The skills needed to teach Caribbean literature, language and culture 
  • Higher-level writing and research skills that promote interdisciplinary approaches to the complexities of modern culture 
  • The utility of being immersed in a Caribbean environment to the study of Caribbean culture and thought

Research

This programme involves faculty from across the Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature. Our instructors have deep knowledge of Caribbean literature, history, culture and language.

Programme Details

5 courses approved by the Faculty of Humanities & Education must be taken.  
 
You will do courses in: 
  1. Caribbean Linguistic and Cultural Identity 
  1. Language and media 
  1. Pedagogy 
  1. Creative arts (theatre, writing, visual arts) 
You will also complete a compulsory research paper of 15,000-20,000 words (30-40 pages).
