About the Programme

This programme is designed to provide educators with an understanding of how social, cultural, philosophical, and institutional forces shaping education systems, student learning, and educational policies, within the Caribbean region.

It is intended to provide those in the field of education with relevant knowledge, skills and competencies required to more effectively address the underlying issues and challenges in contemporary education.
 

 
 

What Will I Study?

You will discover a deeper understanding and awareness of:

  • The role schools play as systematic providers of education;
  • ​The symbiotic relationship which exists between schools and society a large;
  • The need for and means by which schools can better prepare 21st century students for their roles as active national, regional and global citizens living within democracies;
  • The national, regional and international developments, trends and challenges which shape the development of education policies in the Caribbean and beyond;
  • Current philosophies driving education reform in the Caribbean;
  • Relevant education policies and policy documents in use across various Caribbean territories; and
  • The relationship which exists between education and development.

Research

Our Faculty conducts research in all areas of Education. We focus on investigating education issues and problems within schools and within the broader education system.

  • Current Issues in Education
  • Advanced Sociology of Education
  • Caribbean Ideologies and Policies in Education
  • Citizenship Education, Democracy and Global Trends Creole Linguistics
  • Electives from the Department of Government, Sociology and Social Work or the Department of Gender Studies

Admission to the Master of Education programme will normally require:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree of at least Lower Second Class Honours and the Diploma in Education of The University of the West Indies or any other diploma or certificate in Education acceptable to the School of Education;
  2. A Bachelor’s degree with courses in Education acceptable to the School of Education; 
  3. A Bachelor’s degree and a Teacher’s College Certificate that are both acceptable to the School of Education;
  4. The Bachelor of Education Degree of the UWI or 
  5. Any qualification deemed to be equivalent by the appropriate committee of the Faculty of Humanities and Education.
