Curated by Dr. Therese Hadchity and a cross section of Cultural Studies students, the Pebbles Bloomed into Islands Art Exhibition which opened on March 20, 2024, sought to illuminate the vulnerability of Barbados (and the Caribbean at large) in the face of climate change. Students were required to scan a wide selection of paintings, installations, digital and video-works for evidence of deforestation, monoculture, over-development, sea-level rise, erosion, pollution, sargassum and vanishing traditions. Other artworks were selected to indicate resource extraction, water depletion, CO2 emissions and to gesture towards some of the social tensions and development inequities associated with tourism. While the exhibition demonstrated the complexity of the ‘climate problem’ in the Caribbean, it also served as a practical exercise in how to produce, install, market and manage an exhibition. A series of school visits moreover proved the exhibition to be an effective instrument in stimulating climate awareness.
