About the Programme

The Bachelor of Science in Sport Coaching is designed to equip sports coaches with the required knowledge, skills, attitudes and techniques to deliver quality coaching to individual athletes and teams, with a view to improving sporting performance in the Caribbean.

What Will I Study?

On successful completion, the graduates of the BSc. in Sport Coaching will be able to: 
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of a competent coach. 
  • Research the importance of developing a philosophy for coaching. 
  • Develop a philosophy for coaching. 
  • Describe the learning process and principles of training. 
  • Design session, microcycle, mesocycle and macrocycle plans for individuals or teams involved in sport. 
  • Explain the importance of planning in coaching. 
  • Highlight the strategic nature of sport communication. 
  • Critically analyse local and international sporting business organizations.   
  • Investigate the skillset needed to develop a successful business. 
  • Discuss cognitive and social psychological factors that influence behaviour in a sport and exercise environment.  
  • Describe the theoretical principles of sports psychology underpinning applied practice. 
  • Explain research foundations of decision training. 
  • Design decision training session objectives. 
  • Implement the necessary skills suitable for working with otherwise-abled athletes.  
  • Explain the medical, psychological, and physical considerations for special populations.  
  • Analyse coaching sessions in different sports.  
  • Identify a coach’s coaching philosophy.  
  • Write coaching plans for the assigned sport.

Programme Details

Students must complete 30 courses of 90 credit hours in order to graduate. Assessment will be a mix of coursework, assignments and final exams.

Admission is considered for candidates:

  • With a minimum of five CXC CSEC General Proficiency (Grades I-III) or GCE O-Level subjects which must include English Language and either one of the following: a Foreign Language, Mathematics, Geography or an approved Science subject. (Mathematics is required for the Accounting, Economics and Management Studies majors.)
  • With passes in at least two, two-unit CAPE subjects or two GCE A-Level subjects of the equivalent OR
  • With an Associate Degree from an approved tertiary level institution with a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.5 or above OR
  • Who have successfully completed the Certificate in Management and Administration of Sport
