Blackbirds’ Footballers Start Season on Winning Note

The UWI Division 1 football team played their first match on Wednesday 16th February against Haynesville, a team with a strong football history after a brief stint in the premier league.

In their first outing of the season, the Blackbirds of football found it hard to adjust to the less than optimal field conditions. A hard, bouncy and uneven surface made the University’s usual passing game very difficult.

Under Coach Ricardo ‘Cracker’ Goddard, the Blackbirds pecked a hole through the Haynesville defense and broke the deadlock after 12 minutes, with a strike from the formidable left foot of Andre ‘Fur’ Field. The young men should have made it 3-0 at the end of the first half had Chad Bynoe and Jeremy ‘Bunz’ Bradshaw converted easy opportunities. This was not meant to be and the half ended with a 1-0 score line.

After a much needed half time talk, the Blackbirds flew into action again, hungry to hit the target and increase their lead. The Haynesville team on the other hand was determined to stay in the game, displaying brilliant defensive work on occasions.

The easiest opportunity of the match saw Chad Bynoe making an excellent run down the left wing and making a pin point pass to Jeremy Bradshaw, the Blackbird’s top goal scorer for the 2010 season. Bradshaw could not control his shot from six yards out however, and it sailed over the goal post for a goal kick.

While the attackers struggled up front, the wings of Caleb Morgan and Kidwe ‘Djemba’ Sandiford kept the team well defended. Sandiford even found the net, but the goal was ruled offside, an obvious refereeing error. Fabian Massiah, Corey Small, and Dafar Amour-Shillingford also put out their greatest efforts to deny Haynesville from scoring.

Haynesville threw in a tremendous effort late in the match as they were awarded freekicks in some dangerous positions. However, they could not grab the equaliser.

The Blackbirds could not find the back of the net again before the end of a lengthy injury time but held off the opposition to earn a well deserved three (3) points with their 1-0 win.
