Making a Mark in International Hockey

Leiws makes his debut
 
The FIH Hockey World League Round 1 got underway on September 30 in Kingston, Jamaica and when it did, Shane Lewis made the University proud as he assumed officiating duties in his first international tournament.

Lewis, a 27-year-old Programme Assistant in the Academy of Sport, was appointed as an umpire in the tournament, which is part of the qualification process for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This international appointment provided further evidence of the meteoric rise in the umpiring
ranks for Lewis, who is only into his 3rd year of competitive hockey umpiring. When asked how he improved his umpiring skills in such a short space of time, he attributed “intense studying, watching educational material and always being willing to listen to advice from others” as key factors to improving, not only in hockey umpiring but in most other skills any individual is trying to acquire.
