Blackbirds Jump to 8th Position
Blackbirds Table Tennis Club defeats BUT 3-0
In round two action of the Roleric Division 2 of the Barbados Table Tennis Club Championships last week, the UWI Blackbirds registered their third victory in four matches, against BUT.
Donald Miller took the table first for the Blackbirds, quickly settling and playing some outstanding tennis from the serve of the first ball. In what was one of his best matches of the season, Miller raced out to a 2-0 lead after a series of piercing backhands and ‘thunderspin’ forehand loops, which proved too much for his opponent Keon Alleyne. In the third game however, the official informed Miller that he was not tossing the ball high enough when serving, and warned him that he could be defaulted points for continuing. This seemed to have an effect on the UWI player, as he lost focus and dropped the third game 11-2. He quickly regained composure in the fourth game however, to close out the match and hand the blackbirds a 1-0 lead.
Captain Melanie Scantlebury was up next for the Blackbirds, but unlike Miller, she took some time to settle into her match against Romel Carter. Scantlebury found herself in a bit of trouble early in the first game, slipping behind 7-2, but managed to compose herself to come from behind to take the game at 11-9. Her momentum rolled over to the second game as she took it 11-9, and then took the third 13-11 to close out the match in straight games.
Following in Scantlebury’s footsteps was Nadia Payne, who dominated her opponent’s defensive game with blistering forehand attacks. Although dropping the third game 11-9, Payne maintained focus throughout the match to win 3-1.
The victory helped the Blackbirds to jump from 10th position to 8th position, 1 point behind 7th placed Reddy Kilowatt.
After a cellar position finish at the end of round one of the Roleric Miller Division 2 category of the Barbados Table Tennis Club Championships, the UWI Blackbirds have flapped their wings tremendously to make an outstanding improvement in round two action.
