Blackbirds defeat defending champs
Rendezvous defeated
It had to happen sometime and UWI have the distinction of being the first team to do it. UWI last night handed Rendezvous their first defeat in all competitions since their entry in the to the BFA competition three years ago and in the process booting the defending Knock Out Champions out of the Champions Cup competition.

All this action went down on Sunday before a large crowd at the National Stadium in the third round of the KFC Champions Cup. Seventeen minutes into the first half Carlo Perry delivered a stunner which put UWI up 1-0 on the defending Champions. The Stadium was in an uproar with screams of excitement and horns blowing. This was the score until referee Gillian Martindale awarded Rendezvous a penalty in the 32nd minute. Miron Samuel converted from the spot to level the score.

Rendezvous seemingly found their form and were running all over UWI. The pressure did pay off when another Samuel, this time Shandel found the goal on the stroke of halftime to put the champs up 2-1. Into the halftime and early in the second half UWI were on the back foot and staring elimination in the face.

As hard as they tried to penetrate the experienced Rendezvous defense with the likes of Gregory “Lalu” Goodridge, Floyd Bailey and Paul Lovell it would not crack until Shaquille Layne muscled his way into the 18-yeard box and rifled a shot past a hapless Kerry Holder in the Rendezvous goal. His 2-2 equalizer set the tone for a thrilling fight to the end saw both teams deadlocked at the interval and after 30 minutes extra-time.
Into penalties and this is where Rendezvous would lose it compliments a brilliant performance by the UWI custodian Tazieo Riley. He put down two magnificent saves off Goodridge and Romano Snagg to set up the UWI win. Jason Carter, Carlo Perry, Rivere Williams and Tito Beckles all scored their penalties for UWI. Shandel Samuels was the only penalty scorer for Rendezvous. UWI were the 4-1 winners.
