An understanding of the different types of information sources and their value to research is therefore critical to the research process.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Books <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Books are generally useful for:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Providing a background and a broad overview of a topic.<\/li>\n<li>Researching a topic that is historical and\/or understanding the historical development of a topic.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Finding several opinions on a topic in one place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Books will not help you if your topic is very recent or when your topic is fairly narrow.<\/strong>&nbsp; Apart from general texts,<strong> Reference Books<\/strong> are also a critical source of information especially when starting research on a topic.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Reference Books<\/strong> include:\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dictionaries and Encyclopedias (both general and subject)<\/li>\n<li>Handbooks<\/li>\n<li>Manuals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.cavehill.uwi.edu\/smlibrary\/search.aspx\"><strong>Go to Find Books \u00bb<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Articles<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Articles can either be published in <b>journals, magazines or newspapers<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tArticles in scholarly journals are written by experts in the field, are of a high quality and hence a critical resource for the academic researcher.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>The articles in popular magazines and newspapers are written for a general audience.<\/strong> The articles published in these sources <strong>contain up to date information on issues<\/strong> of popular interest and are good resources for editorials and opinions.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarly journals<\/strong> are useful when your topic is narrow and when you need to find information on a topic that is supported by research data.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Popular <strong>magazines<\/strong> are useful to keep up to date with what the latest developments on issues which are of general interest and\/or the latest developments within a specific field.&nbsp;
