A recent study has brought fresh attention to a critical yet often overlooked issue in the world of sports: whistleblowing.

In his findings, titled “Whistleblowing in Sports: A Case Study of Whistleblowing in Caribbean Sports,” Head of the Academy of Sport at The UWI, Cave Hill, Dr. Rudolph Alleyne, highlights the challenges whistleblowers face and the lack of adequate protections for those who come forward to expose wrongdoing within the sports industry.

Dr. Alleyne’s research sheds light on several significant instances of whistleblowing in sports, revealing the global and regional issues that hinder transparency and accountability in this area. One of the major concerns identified is the absence of sufficient research, policies, and procedures related to whistleblowing in sports, particularly in the Caribbean context.

The study also addresses a key issue: the reluctance of whistleblowers to speak out due to fear of retaliation or punitive action. Dr. Alleyne underscores the need for comprehensive policies to protect whistleblowers, noting that anonymity and legal safeguards are crucial for encouraging individuals to come forward.

The research highlights two essential strategies for fostering whistleblowing in sports: raising awareness about reporting mechanisms and ensuring anonymity for those who blow the whistle. Dr. Alleyne emphasises the importance of accessible platforms and educational resources that equip potential whistleblowers with the knowledge and tools to safely report misconduct.

This study advocates for urgent reforms in Caribbean sports to address these gaps, calling on sports organisations and policymakers to implement stronger protections and anonymous reporting systems.

Dr. Alleyne’s work brings much-needed attention to whistleblowing as an essential tool for upholding integrity and fairness in the sports world. Through his research, he aims to inspire action and dialogue on the issue, encouraging reforms that will create safer environments for whistleblowers and help strengthen transparency within Caribbean sports.
