A groundbreaking study is set to shed new light on the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in Barbados.  MPhil candidate Alvin Sandiford is investigating the genetic strains of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, commonly known as MRSA, which is responsible for infections in hospitals and the wider community.

The research could provide critical evidence to help reduce transmission, improve treatment outcomes, and strengthen the country’s public health response.

MRSA, a type of bacteria that is resistant to several commonly used antibiotics, is recognised worldwide as a major public health concern. However, limited information is currently available on the specific strains circulating locally and the role they play in the spread of disease and treatment outcomes within the Barbadian population.

Tracking MRSA Spread

The study seeks to fill this knowledge gap through a combination of advanced scientific testing and public health research. A key component involves whole genome sequencing, a cutting-edge laboratory technique that analyses the bacterium’s complete genetic makeup. This allows researchers to identify relationships between different strains of MRSA and track how they are spreading within healthcare facilities and the wider community.

Samples are being collected from both infected individuals and frequently touched surfaces in community settings, providing a broader picture of the bacteria’s presence and movement throughout the island.

In addition to laboratory testing, the research includes interviews and focus group discussions with healthcare workers and people considered to be at higher risk of MRSA infection. These insights will help researchers understand how environmental conditions, healthcare practices and everyday behaviours may influence transmission and reinfection.

Sandiford, a registered medical laboratory technologist, says the research is particularly significant as MRSA infections can be particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups, including hospital patients, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Strengthening Infection Prevention

By identifying the dominant strains circulating in the country, the study is expected to provide valuable evidence to strengthen infection prevention measures, enhance disease surveillance and support more informed treatment decisions. The results may also help health authorities develop targeted interventions that are better suited to local conditions, rather than relying solely on broad approaches developed elsewhere.

Sandiford’s research contributes to ongoing international efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance and improve patient safety.

By combining genetic science with real-world experiences from healthcare settings and communities, the study highlights how research can inform practical strategies to reduce disease transmission and improve health outcomes across Barbados.
