The Department of Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Culture, Creative and Performing Arts presents a VIVA presentation by PhD Candidate Margaret Harris. The title is "Cultural Diversity and the UNESCO 2005 Convention: Implications and Options for the Caribbean Community".
Abstract
The aim of the study is to critically analyse “The UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and the Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions”, examining the core premises in the UNESCO model of cultural diversity, the diversity of cultural expressions and the cultural and creative industries, and their implications and options for the CARICOM region. A key concern of the study is the goal of sustainable development through the cultural and creative industries and its intersection with cultural and natural capital.
The study discusses the cultural historicist approach in the Convention and more broadly, UNESCO’s framing of culture, which dismisses the politics of race/racism and shifts the focus of development discourse from the impacts of history.
