Cave Hill’s 60th Anniversary Legacy Lecture Series, themed Building Resilience, Building Nations features a line-up of preeminent scholars and thought leaders from across various disciplines who will present on the campus’ contribution to the development of the region in various spheres, in terms of training of professionals and the creation of policies and programmes to aid in regional development.
The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus in association with the Nation Publishing Company Limited presents the fifth lecture in the series. Dr Marcia Burrowes, Lecturer in Cultural Studies, will address the topic “Debating Identities: Culture and the University”.
Kamau Brathwaite contended, "the very existence of a university is a cultural act". This lecture gives focus to the spaces within the university where the arts and culture are especially reviewed. It maps key moments in the history of the Cave Hill campus that provide insight into the changing constructs of its identity. It will be argued that matters pertaining to the arts and culture were made integral to the university from the inception and have continuously impacted its identity over sixty years.
Presenter's Bio:
Dr. Marcia Burrowes conceptualised, crafted, and implemented courses for the Cultural Studies Programme at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the Cave Hill, Mona, and St. Augustine campuses of The University of the West Indies. Dr. Burrowes served as Assistant Chief, then Chief of CAPE Caribbean Studies. As Chief, she was responsible for the Caribbean region, circa Belize to Guyana, conducting workshops and overseeing the syllabi and examinations for CAPE Caribbean Studies course. In her spare time, Marcia is an actor, director, and producer in Barbados theatre. She has conducted Caribbean cultural and theatre workshops in the Caribbean and its Diaspora. In 2013, she was awarded the Barbados Service Star (BSS) by the Government of Barbados, in appreciation for her work in cultural development. Dr. Burrowes is an author and presenter on the radio programme “Today in Bajan History”.
