UWItv is pleased to announce the launch of a new series in its programming entitled “UWI’s PhDs, a Conversation in Development.” This special series, highlighting the research and findings of the doctoral research and theses of UWI PhD graduates, was designed and developed in partnership with the University’s School for Graduate Studies and Research. 

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution to designate February 17 annually as Global Tourism Resilience Day. The resolution was initiated by Professor Lloyd Waller from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) who also serves as Executive Director of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC), which is hosted at The UWI Mona Campus.

This declaration from Vice-Chancellor of The UWI, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles was made during the project launch ceremony for The UWI-CDB Digital Transformation Programme held on Monday, February 6 at the University’s Regional Headquarters in Jamaica.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Cave Hill campus has launched a reading program in collaboration with The Barbados National Library Service and the charity Kids in Action, as part of its 60^th Anniversary celebrations. The initiative, “Between the Lines,” seeks to engage children in weekly reading activities to improve their learning skills. Sessions are conducted by a Cave Hill instructor and members of the local teaching community, current and retired. Cave Hill undergraduate students have also volunteered to assist with the sessions.

At her January 21 Induction as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad and Tobago, Professor Rose-Marie Belle Antoine reflected that she is guided by a belief in the “exceptional nature as Caribbean people, and an imperative to make a positive contribution to society.”

The UWI Cave Hill Campus is celebrating its 60^th anniversary with a scheduled year-long calendar of events. Activities are carded to be held in Barbados and the Easter Caribbean which the campus was originally intended to serve.

In furtherance of its strategic agenda and vision as a global university rooted in the Caribbean, The University of the West Indies (The UWI), announces the appointment of its new Pro Vice-Chancellor (PVC) Global Affairs, Sandrea Maynard, LLB (Hons) LLM, SFHEA, PgCHE. PVC Maynard, whose appointment became effective on January 1, 2023, will lead the regional university’s global engagement portfolio and coordinate all internationalisation and strategic global initiatives across The UWI system.

The American Historical Association has voted to select Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles as its Honorary Foreign Scholar for 2023.

Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, has announced that the University’s Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda is set for a “magnificent take-off”. He was speaking during a ceremony held at the Campus on January 17, during which Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, The Honourable Gaston Browne signed an agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) to secure US$80 million to invest in the development of The UWI’s youngest landed campus.
 

The Caribbean Science Foundation (CSF) held the inaugural Caribbean STEM Olympiads on 20 – 22 January 2023 in a virtual format. In these Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Olympiads, individuals and teams representing educational institutions, clubs or themselves competed in several STEM events at three different age levels: Level 1 for students 12 – 15 years of age, Level 2 for students 16 – 18 years of age, and Level 3 for students 19 – 21 years of age. The events of the 2023 STEM Olympiads included: (a) Math Olympiads, (b) a Robotics Showcase and (c) Computer Coding Games. The Computer Coding Games consisted of Apps, and Websites aimed at solving one of six challenges faced by Caribbean communities (energy production and consumption, food security and food safety, non-communicable diseases, transportation, money movement, financial education, and geohazards and climate change).
