The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus is once again playing a significant role in a critical area of national development in Barbados.
A team of students from the institution is conducting a National Survey on Literacy over the next three months, on behalf of the National Task Force on Literacy Education.
With an aim to address a gap in data on literacy research in Barbados, the survey seeks to assess the literacy skills including reading, writing, listening and speaking, among residents of Barbados. It will also gather opinions on attitudes towards literacy and its impact on personal, workplace and professional development.
The students are gathering information across all parishes in Barbados, and are working under the supervision of Professor Dwayne Devonish of the Department of Management Studies. Households will be randomly selected to participate, and participation is entirely voluntary. Additionally, all personal information collected will remain confidential.
Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Dr Sylvia Henry, who heads the task force, said the findings will be available to the campus and will be presented to the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training to inform literacy education for all Barbadians.
