Cave Hill, BVI Int Arbitration Centre Sign Expansive MOU
25 September 2024
The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus and the British Virgin Islands International Arbitration Centre (BVI IAC) have formalised their partnership in support of students and research into dispute resolution.
The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) earlier this month to promote arbitration and other means of dispute resolution.
Under the agreement, the BVI IAC will offer internships and fellowships to students from Cave Hill, and support their participation in moot competitions.
Additionally, opportunities will be provided for suitably qualified individuals at The UWI Cave Hill’s Faculty of Law to be included on the panel of tribunal secretaries at the BVI IAC.
Both parties have agreed to collaborate on research projects and conducting surveys relating to the use of alternative methods of dispute resolution in the Caribbean and surrounding regions; disseminating knowledge and best practices about arbitration, conciliation, mediation, and alternative methods of dispute resolution; and jointly organising conferences, public lectures, seminars, courses, or other in-person events on international arbitration.
They will also work together on research and publication initiatives between staff of both institutions.
The UWI Cave Hill Campus and BVI IAC will provide marketing and logistical support where possible, for the participation of members of the local and international arbitration communities in any major event organised by either party.
Acting Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr. Antonius Hippolyte said the MOU will pave the way for new areas of cooperation and will be beneficial to both institutions.
“Furthering education and research is an important pillar at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Faculty of Law. It is through education that we can foster mutual understanding, exchange ideas, and create opportunities for future generations.
“Such agreements can advance knowledge, develop new solutions and train the young minds of future leaders,” Hippolyte said.
CEO of the BVI IAC, Shan Greer, expressed her organisation’s pleasure in collaborating with The UWI to help mold future legal scholars.
“We are thrilled to formalise this partnership with The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. By working together, we are not only advancing the practice of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution in the Caribbean, but we are also investing in the future of the region’s legal professionals.
“Providing students with practical opportunities such as internships, fellowships, and moot competitions will help equip the next generation of leaders with the skills and experience needed to excel in the evolving landscape of international dispute resolution,” Greer stated.
