The UWI Cave Hill Campus is celebrating its 60

The sixtieth anniversary celebrations are being held under the theme ‘Resolute and Resilient’. Events kick off with a Press Launch tomorrow, Thursday 19
th January at 10:00 a.m. in the Jacqueline Wade Conference Room, Hilary McDonald Beckles Administration Complex. The day following the Press Launch, a Parade and Fun Day will be held on the Cave Hill grounds to enable staff, students, alumni and others to showcase the history and culture of the campus in vibrant colours. Highlights of the parade include the unveiling of a portrait and installations at historic sites, with entertainment provided by the Cavite Chorale, Mikey, RPB, Mr. Blood and several other performing acts.
Included in the year-long festivities are monthly parish hikes, the first of which begins at the Botanical Gardens on January 22
nd.
Cave Hill Campus began as the College of Arts and Sciences on a temporary site at the Deep-Water Harbour in Bridgetown in October 1963. In 1967, it relocated to its present site at Cave Hill.
Today the main campus sits on 47 acres of land which The UWI holds on long-term lease from the Government of Barbados and is uniquely the only campus of The UWI that overlooks the Caribbean Sea. In 2008 the Government of Barbados granted the campus an additional 33 acres of land for its expansion. Cave Hill’s scenic location, together with its relatively small size, has given it an atmosphere of intimacy and friendliness that has been remarked by students, staff and visitors alike.
The Cave Hill celebrations run parallel to the University’s 75
th anniversary commemorations to mark the official opening of its first campus in Mona, Jamaica in 1948.
