The former senator, longstanding university public orator and architectural historian was highly acclaimed at the book launch held at Cave Hill campus’s Clinical Skills Complex, Errol Walrond Building on Wednesday, May 11. The in-person and online event hosted by The Faculty of Medical Sciences was billed as a celebration of Sir Henry’s life and tapestry, and included several speakers who shared anecdotes and spoke glowingly of him.
Among them were Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus Professor Clive Landis; Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr. Peter Adams; Professor Emeritus Pedro Welch and Dr. Kenneth Connell, Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
There were recorded video tributes from Professor
Peter Figueroa of Jamaica; Director of the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre, Professor Simon Anderson; and General Manager of The UWI Press Nadine Buckland.
Professor Figueroa, who shares 55 years of friendship with Sir Henry, described the autobiography as a gem, adding that there was more to Sir Henry than revealed in the book.
“I am looking forward to another autobiography because he has much more to tell.”
During his on-stage interaction with Dr. Connell, who chaired launch ceremony, Sir Henry said he was humbled by the glowing tributes.
“I’ve had a very amazing life and people have asked me why I took the trouble to write this. [They have asked] is this some kind of self-promotion? Not really because I write. I’ve written from the time I was four years old…and I enjoy writing,” the retired dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences said.
Sir Henry has written more than a dozen books, including the recently launched
Did You Know? People, Places and Untold Stories of Historic Barbados.
