Law Faculty begins beautification project
08 September 2021
The unveiling of a stunningly vibrant mural at the Faculty of Law of the Cave Hill Campus of The University of the West Indies marked the start of a beautification project in that department.
The mural, which was unveiled on July 7, depicts scenes of the ocean, and is located in the Students’ Commons, a popular area for students to congregate.
The artwork was done over several months by Professor Alina Kaczorowska Ireland, and is part of the Facility Enhancement and Beautification Project that was launched last year. Plans continue for the installation of a donor wall on the grounds of the faculty, improvements to the law deck, central student terrace, and the general maintenance of the plant.
Principal of the Cave Hill Campus, Professor the Most Honourable Eudine Barriteau described the mural as a testament to the faculty’s commitment to student-centeredness. She thanked those who made it a reality, including past president of the Law Society Ashleigh-Ann Dussard who conceptualised the beautification project, former Dean David Berry, and the Dean’s Council for their role in mobilising the necessary resources.
Professor Barriteau said another mural will be placed on the northern exterior wall of the Frank Worrell Halls, featuring iconic scenery from Barbados and the Caribbean. It is being made possible through a $50,000 grant from the Art and Sport Promotion Fund of the Ministry of Creative Economy, Culture and Sport.
Last week’s activity followed an opening ceremony for the Law and Health Research Unit. Both events were part of celebrations marking the golden anniversary of the Faculty. The Faculty of Law will host other celebratory activities including distinguished lectures; 50
th anniversary bursaries; recognition of 50 distinguished alumni of the faculty for their exceptional performance at the national, regional and international levels; a legal forum where undergraduates can engage on topical issues; a discussion forum involving five generations of law graduates; mooting and debating competition involving law students from Cave Hill, Mona and St. Augustine campuses and a gala evening in December.
Interim Dean Professor Eddy Ventose said as the Faculty celebrates excellence, it is uniquely placed to continue contributing to the legal landscape by producing excellent graduates and quality legal research and publications.
