June 3, 2026
The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has announced the promotion of Dr. Michael Campbell to the rank of Professor, effective March 12, 2026.
He is now Professor of Psychology and Global Health, and is one of eight academics across The UWI campuses who were awarded the pinnacle of academic recognition that month based on their sustained commitment to addressing pressing challenges of Caribbean and global importance and scholarly work.
As a leading voice in mental health research, particularly within Small Island Developing States, Professor Campbell’s work spans climate and disaster mental health, psychometric validation, the wellbeing of young adults and sexual minorities, and the ethical conduct of research involving vulnerable populations.
He has authored 54 refereed journal articles, nine book chapters, and more than 60 additional academic outputs. His research has been published in leading international journals such as Nature Mental Health, Psychological Medicine, the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, Archives of Sexual Behavior, Frontiers in Psychiatry, and Cambridge Prisms: Global Mental Health.
External assessors described his scholarship as both wide-ranging and deeply grounded in regional realities, commending its “original and systematic engagement with the ecological and social realities of Caribbean populations.”
Professor Campbell currently serves as Deputy Dean for Graduate Studies and Research in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Cave Hill. He joined The UWI in 2005 and has played a pivotal role in strengthening research capacity and postgraduate training, while advancing ethical standards in health research across Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
He also chairs the Research Ethics Committee for both the Cave Hill Campus and the Barbados Ministry of Health and Wellness.
An accomplished mentor and educator, Professor Campbell has supervised more than 20 graduate students and delivered over 100 presentations internationally. He is co-editor of The Cambridge Handbook of Psychology and the Planet: Environment, Climate, Sustainability, and Nature (2026).
His international engagements include service as Lecturer in Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. He currently serves as Senior Fellow at the International Institute of Geopsychiatry, Fellow of four divisions of the American Psychological Association and of the British Psychological Society. Additionally, he serves as Co-Chair of the Caribbean Collaborative Centre for Geopsychiatry and Director of the International Centre for Applied Ethics and Public Affairs.
Professor Campbell’s contributions have been recognised with numerous awards, including The UWI Cave Hill Principal’s Award for Excellence in University and Public Service (2021), the Faculty of Medical Sciences Dean’s Award for Excellence (2025), and the American Psychological Association’s Citizen Psychologist Presidential Citation (2018).
