Organisations grow when new ideas and processes are brought to fruition.  Project design and management skills are necessary to efficiently and effectually transition from idea to profitable enterprise; project evaluation skills are necessary to ensure that organisations learn from their mistakes and improve processes for the future.  Our courses are structured to present the more contemporary perspectives and techniques in the three key areas of project design, management, in the interest of ensuring that graduates become invaluable project members/leaders in their respective organisations.

Program Evaluation

In the Caribbean region and the world, much attention is paid to the development of economic and social programmes to effect societal, business and human development.  Yet, too little attention is given to measuring the effectiveness of implemented programmes.  Specialists in this rapidly growing field are in high demand, and this course is designed to provide you with an understanding of what is involved in designing a programme evaluation. You will be exposed to various evaluation frameworks and designs, and explore the purposes associated with different types of evaluation.  The communication of evaluation findings will also form part of the course material.

Contemporary Project Management

This short course, based on the newly-released Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide, Edition 6), provides an overview of the theory, framework, international standards, tools and techniques used to effectively design and deliver projects. It is designed for current professional staff in the Barbados private sector who manage or support projects that are aligned with the strategic objectives of their organisations. It may also be useful for professional staff in Public Sector and Non-Governmental Organisations who have private sector partners in projects, as it helps to build a common language and expectation about components of a project lifecycle.

In the course, practitioners will learn the overall approach and specific processes that “good/best practices” suggest, to ensure their projects are appropriately planned, strategically positioned, and properly executed within their organizations. While the traditional project manager may focus mainly on the schedule and budget, the strategic project manager cloaks a project in its organizational ROI, gives it a “brand identity”, and keeps it visible throughout the Project Management Lifecycle from Initiation through Closeout. This contemporary project manager also knows how to gain and maintain credibility in the project manager role and can lead others to view the project management process as a key business process. The framework, tools and techniques can be modified/tailored to work in virtually any project-driven organisation, so this course will help professional staff be selective about choosing the processes that balance scope, schedule, budget, resources, quality, risks and stakeholder expectations. Finally, the course will also assist them in learning how to know where to look when one is evaluating a project’s overall performance.

Quantitative & Qualitative Methods for Planning, Monitoring & Controlling Projects

The best project outcomes are often a consequence of careful project planning and strict and effective monitoring during the implementation stage. There are several tried and proven qualitative and quantitative methods for project planning, monitoring and control, which if applied, can significantly increase the probability of project success. This course will introduce you to a broad range of seldom-used, already built-in capabilities in common project management application-driven tools and techniques. The overall intent of this course is to provide you with the knowledge to improve their own project outcomes and to encourage them to introduce change through their own efforts and through mentoring others.
