Market Access – Trade in Goods

The course introduces students to the substantive provisions of trade law relating to market access for trade in goods. In particular, students will acquire a thorough understanding of the role of tariffs in international trade; the rules pertaining to the application of tariffs, other duties and charges and non-tariff barriers to market access and the implications of these rules for Caribbean countries. Students will also acquire skills in interpreting the Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System which is widely used to indicate the outcomes of market access negotiations on tariffs and rules of origin. By the end of the course students will be expected to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to analyse actual and hypothetical Caribbean trade policies and instruments including the CARICOM Common External Tariff and Rules of Origin.

Incorporating Sustainability Goals in Projects

This course aims to facilitate the development of students’ knowledge and understanding necessary to identify and assess risks associated with unsustainable (net negative) practices in projects they will take part in throughout their careers. Today, projects designed to implement policies that are labelled “sustainable” may reduce but not replace what is “used up” in the process of design and implementation. In this course, students will learn to elevate their approach to critical thinking, data gathering and decision-making about truly sustainable alternatives to net negative sustainable processes, and to identify and execute opportunities to apply innovative responses to major sustainability issues as well. This learning will emerge from dialoguing with expert lecturers, absorbing assigned reading materials covering a range of frameworks, models, and approaches that are already known to reverse negative or unsustainable practices, and by applying them to diverse case studies and then to a field project in the Caribbean.
After completing their post-graduate degree programme, the students will be able to incorporate into their toolkit of contemporary project management practices, a sustainability mindset that enables them to champion sustainable development. Ultimately, they could place themselves as partners and leaders in a movement that more and more governments and businesses are embracing, by re-evaluating the products they are delivering (and for whom),  addressing human and material resources from a new (not exclusively profit-based) perspective, adjusting the strategic direction of their organizations to include opportunities to develop ethical partnerships for greater impact, and incorporating more equity and empathy in project selections decisions that impact stakeholders.

Introduction to China’s Trade and Investment Law and Policy

The economic cooperation between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and China opens windows of great opportunity for both sides. For anyone who is interested in developing economic relationships with their Chinese counterpart, it is fundamental to understand China’s law and policy concerning trade and investment. Therefore, this two-week course will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of China’s approaches to international trade and investment through the lenses of both national and international legal institutions. The course is divided into three sections. The first section provides a landscape-view of the fundamentals of China’s domestic law, policy and its practice related to foreign trade and investment. The second section introduces how China has engaged in global economic governance through transnational legal institutions including the World Trade Organization, Regional Trade Agreements, Bilateral Investment Treaties and the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI). The third section focuses on the cooperation mechanism between the CARICOM and China, including the bilateral agreements between Caribbean countries and China, the BRI projects and the future collaboration opportunities. In each of these sections, the course will situate China’s law and policy into the broader context of international economic order and the geopolitical interplay among major trading partners of CARICOM.

This course is an internally recognised and certified course based on the Food Safety Preventive Controls Alliance (FSPCA) course curriculum. Participants will learn how to develop a food safety plan and understand the new Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) regulations, using best practices and case study examples, in a collaborative and interactive eLearning environment.

Preventive food safety controls allow businesses to identify and correct issues early in the production process. While many food businesses already have preventive controls in place, by applying food safety requirements more broadly, this further enhances the safety of food across sectors. Mandarin Training for the Caribbean

This training course will be run as a series of short intensive seminars for 6 hours a week over the course of two semesters. It is intended to prepare persons to teach Mandarin in the local Caribbean school system, and so will focus on improving language proficiency, the cultural knowledge of China, as well as providing training in the teaching of the language. It is therefore expected that persons wishing to enrol in the course have an HSK level of 4 or above, or the equivalent based on experience or as assessed through another Chinese language proficiency course. This course will serve as the prerequisite for a future one-year Special Teaching Certificate or Diploma in Mandarin offered out of the School of Education at the Cave Hill Campus.

This course will study the legal systems of major countries and territories belonging to the Civil law tradition, as well as mixed Common/Civil law systems, in their historical, political, and cultural context. It will examine the specifics of using the comparative method when studying Civil Law systems and the practical relevance of this method for lawyers. The course will identify the major Civil law countries and territories, locate their place on the world map of legal traditions as well as raise students’ awareness of the universal features and particularities of various Civil law jurisdictions. Special consideration will be given to Civil law jurisdictions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
