Overview

Meaningful innovation, growth and development hardly ever emerge from day to day business operations. Rather, they are the products of intentional strategic thinking and planning. This course enhances your ability to engage in strategic thinking and planning inclusive of deeper and broader idea generation and greater effectiveness in problem solving. During this course, you will practically apply strategic thinking and planning skills learnt to your organizational strategy, enabling you to bridge the gap between your organization’s current and desired future state.

What will I Learn?

On successful completion of the workshop, delegates will be able to:
  • Identify and assess the important strategic thinking and planning skills that can aid in enhancing the sustainable competitive advantage of an organization;
  • Conceptualize an organization’s vision, mission, goals and values and understand their role in the context of strategic thinking and planning;
  • Evaluate the current state of an organization and its environment using the requisite tools and techniques;
  • Utilize the strategic thinking and planning processes to develop a strategic plan for an organization;
  • Apply the principles necessary to drive the successful implementation of strategic plans.

This short course will adopt an activity-based experiential learning format. It will involve short lectures, aided by multimedia presentations, which will explain key principles, concepts, tools and techniques in strategic thinking and planning. These will be supplemented by breakout sessions, presentations and practical exercises which provide delegates the opportunity to demonstrate their strategic thinking and planning ability and practice new skills acquired throughout the course.

Akhentoolove Corbin, PhD

Dr. Corbin, current Lecturer in management at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, is a specialist in the disciplines of leadership, human resource management/development, business strategy and sustainable competitiveness. Prior to becoming a lecturer at UWI, he provided human resource consulting services to both private and public companies across the Caribbean; in particular, the tourism and hospitality industry and financial services organisations. His main research interests are leadership and competitiveness through innovation and harmony; leadership and human resource management; and leadership and performance in cricket.
