This course is designed for persons who are new to teaching, those who want to be considered for higher education recruitment, or for anyone who wants to develop or refresh skills for teaching in any setting which requires an understanding of the learner and the instructional process. It provides an opportunity to learn from highly-trained education professionals with several successful years of applying educational pedagogy and theory. The course also provides a chance to network with and be motivated by colleagues who share similar interests. The sessions will be delivered virtually and are interactive with authentic experiences. An oral presentation and a teaching portfolio will comprise the assessment for this course.

All persons can benefit from an awareness of the rudiments of teaching others. An effective teacher can inspire and transform but this does not occur incidentally. A teacher must be trained to apply various strategies, recognise teaching and learning preferences and select appropriate educational tools. An effective teacher needs to learn how to self-assess and adapt self accordingly for maximum performance. This course is ideal for those who want to transition into teaching or those who want to refresh skills and knowledge. It will allow participants to make sense of teaching before entering a more extensive training programme. The course is a good avenue for networking with others who can share teaching experiences from all over the world. Additionally, this course supports The UWI Strategic Plan to boost revenue efforts, foster effective communication and good interpersonal skills and encourage those who want to be innovative and entrepreneurial. The successful completion of this certificate course will result in a more attractive candidate for colleges and universities which are recruiting well-prepared teachers.
The following topics will be addressed:
This course will be delivered virtually over eight weeks and twenty-four hours, total. The facilitators will utilise interactive lecturing techniques, group activities, scenarios, experiential activities and oral presentations. There will be on-going asynchronous forum conversations throughout the course. Presentations will also be delivered through PowerPoint and other multi-media. Participants will be encouraged to work cooperatively and independently to complete activities.

Dr Sylvia Henry , a graduate accredited teacher and curriculum specialist, is the Director of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning , Cave Hill Campus . She is the Coordinator and a Facilitator of the Postgraduate Certificate in University Teaching and Learning programme , a programme which aims to develop the teaching skills of faculty.
