Overview

The emergence of a knowledge economy and society has contributed to the growing recognition that human resources now represent a critical investment that must be strategically managed to ensure success in an increasingly turbulent global marketplace.  This course identifies how human resource management can gain credibility as a new strategic business partner and give credence to the often-quoted statement that ‘people are our most important asset’. The evolution of strategy and models of strategic human resource management form a substantive element in the course which also examines changing labour markets configurations.

What will I Learn?

On completion of this course, you will have new knowledge, skills and abilities to:
  • Explain ‘strategic’ in strategic human resource management;
  • Explain the concept of business strategy and its core elements;
  • Evaluate models of strategic human resource management in organisations and their relationship to business performance and competitiveness;
  • Analyze environmental forces (labour market) that impact human resource management;
  • Utilise basic strategic thinking capabilities;
  • Discuss the growing importance of employees as knowledge workers;
  • Examine the changing psychological contract and the impact of flexibility, individualization and employability on employment relations;
  • Analyse strategic human resource management in unionized and non-unionized environment;
  • Establish the linkage between SHRM and competitiveness;
  • Explain how different structural configurations impact human resource management strategically;
  • Evaluate how HRM can gain a seat in the board-room and become a strategic partner;
  • Examine the critical role that workplace diversity plays in achieving business success;
  • Examine the impact of culture on the process of managing human resources;
  • Apply knowledge of Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS) to help support strategic HR Management and deliver effective HR services.

Who Should do this Course

Individuals who meet the entry requirements for postgraduate level training, including managers, human resource practitioners and professionals who must evaluate models of strategic human resource management in their organisations and their relationship to business performance and competitiveness, as well as those who desire to earn how to analyse strategic human resource management in a unionized and non-unionized environment.

  • Applicants must bring all required documentation to the Department of Management Studies, Graduate Section, for their application to be processed.
  • Individuals applying for postgraduate modules, whose native language is not English, must take tests,  to demonstrate English Language proficiency prior to registration, as identified in the Manual of Procedures re: Regulations for Graduate Diplomas and Degrees (Sec. 1, Para. 5).

For entry into this course, applicants must have at least an undergraduate degree, or five (5) years relevant work experience. Applicants may also be asked to provide an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.
The teaching methods to be used in this course will include the use of case studies and Lecture/Discussion. Students’ active participation will help to create a rich learning environment that will aid in their understanding of the material oral presentations, creative thinking and continuous review.
