Sports and Events Management

Overview

Sports events attract large crowds, media attention and considerable corporate investment; they help to create national identity, are important to a country’s tourism appeal and can be a catalyst for host city legacies of new venues, regeneration and municipal infrastructure. The aim of the Sport and Event Management module is to provide the delegate with the opportunity to develop a critical appreciation of the role of planning, bidding, funding, implementing and creating a legacy of sport events.

What will I Learn?

At the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand the theoretical body of knowledge underminding the practice of events of tourism.
  • Know and engage in reflection on the importance of sports and events within the framework of tourism and hospitality.
  • Equip students with the skills and knowledge relating to all stages of designing, researching and planning and evaluation processes related to sports and events.
  • Enable students to go beyond ' how to do events' and to think strategically about these activities.

Who Should do this Course

Individuals who meet the entry requirements for postgraduate level training, including individuals who work in the sports environment, in the leisure and tourism industry, in hospitality, in sport clubs, and in the management of sport events, who want to acquire a better understanding of sport event management.

Important Information

  • Applicants must bring all required documentation to the Department of Management Studies, Graduate Section, for their application to be processed.
  • Individuals applying for postgraduate modules, whose native language is not English, must take tests,  to demonstrate English Language proficiency prior to registration, as identified in the Manual of Procedures re: Regulations for Graduate Diplomas and Degrees (Sec. 1, Para. 5).

For entry into this course, applicants must have at least an undergraduate degree, or five (5) years relevant work experience. Applicants may also be asked to provide an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.

There will be a series of lectures and guests speakers from the industry that will help establish the key theories, concepts, issues and practices involved in sports and event management and also provide an opportunity for exchange of knowledge regarding the sports and event industry in Barbados.  The class will be exposed to a variety of teaching techniques including group work, case studies and individual presentations in which students will be expected to explore and critically analyse in greater detail the information obtained in the lectures, drawing sometimes on case studies and on their own life and/or work experiences in sports event management
