Overview

Developing nations like most Caribbean territories utilize international sources of financing for funding large projects such as infrastructural projects. These projects therefore require crucial evaluation given the financial risk and other risks projects may face. Project financing has therefore become a critical area of study given that it is the preferred method of funding large scale projects in both developed and developing nations alike, and as such, is a crucial knowledge area required by project managers and, by extension, any professional working on projects within their organization. This course will focus on understanding the rationale for project financing, how to prepare the financial plan, assess the risks, design the financing mix, and raise the funds for projects.

What will I Learn?

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss the background of project financing;
  • Evaluate the crucial factors and techniques used in structuring project financing;
  • Identify financial solutions to detect, allocate, and mitigate the main project risks;
  • Apply financial modelling to several types of project financing structures;
  • Analyze case studies of both successful and failed project financing cases through critical thinking and modelling project finance transactions.
  • Design, develop, structure and execute project finance transactions;

Who Should do this Course

Individuals who meet the entry requirements for postgraduate level training, including project managers and professionals working on projects within their organization, who want to develop their ability to conduct financial, economic and technical feasibility studies for bankable project finance transactions, and who want to be able to identify the various risks involved in projects, risk mitigation and allocation among parties involved in a project finance transaction.

  • Individuals applying for postgraduate modules, whose native language is not English, must take tests,  to demonstrate English Language proficiency prior to registration, as identified in the Manual of Procedures re: Regulations for Graduate Diplomas and Degrees (Sec. 1, Para. 5).

For entry into this course, applicants must have at least an undergraduate degree, or five (5) years relevant work experience. Applicants may also be asked to provide an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.

This course consists of one weekly three-hour lecture. It also uses a mixture of lectures, cases and student assignments. There will be several case studies in which students will be required to apply the principles covered in class to analyze real life situations.
