Overview

This course will offer an opportunity for delegates to critically engage in, and reflect on, the most up to date regional and international literature relating to origins of crime, sentencing, rehabilitation, psychology and the significant role played by professionals working in those areas. Specifically, the course will equip delegates with key practical and theoretical tools to successfully engage in rehabilitation work and develop best practice models of working in the penal service. Additionally, the course content contains key promotion criteria for those working in the prison industry.

What will I Learn?

By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:
  • Discuss how a modern prison system operates and is managed within a framework of rehabilitation and identify the key stakeholders in this process;
  • Explain the interrelationship between crime, offending and rehabilitation and how these are operationalised within the context of prisons and the wider society;
  • Identify the different types of criminals, their likely behaviours within the prison environment, risks of recidivism and how best to meet their rehabilitation needs;
  • Develop programmes and services which support the rehabilitation of prisoners;
  • Develop techniques to effectively and positively work with criminals in the rehabilitation process.

The course is designed for professionals working in the prison service, professionals working in the criminal justice system who have an interest in penology matters, and those in other careers who are interested in acquiring knowledge of how the intersection of these disciplines (penology, psychology and criminology) can provide an overall understanding of crime and rehabilitation in society.

  • The officer versus the person- separation and compartmentalization
  • Designing rehabilitation programmes within the prison context
Delegates should have prior knowledge of the criminal justice system.
This course will be delivered via face to face interactive lectures supported by PowerPoint slides, videos, and through other interactive multimedia.
