Overview

Starting one’s own business has taken on critical importance in our increasingly turbulent economic and workplace environments. Additionally, training in business planning and new venture management has been proven as instrumental in transforming small single owner/family businesses into high growth/high yield ventures. This course addresses the role of market and customer analyses in business planning and takes you through the paces of business plan development and preparation. It also considers the modes of new venture ownership and strategies for growing entrepreneurial enterprises.

What will I Learn?

On successful completion of this course, delegates will be able to:​

  • Analyse markets by identifying the key micro and macro variables impacting on and in markets.
  • Explain the key concepts involved in entrepreneurship.
  • Apply planning techniques to entrepreneurship, and the management of new ventures.
  • Explain which of the various entry strategies that should be utilize in developing new ventures based on the conditions extant in the marketplace.
  • Create a Business Plan that demonstrates the use of strategic management principles in the business development process.

Persons who are entrepreneurs and/or are interested in becoming entrepreneurs; consultants in terms of business planning; persons who have an interest in entrepreneurship and small business; persons who want to improve their knowledge and/or skills set for their own personal advancement.

The following topics/concepts/theories/issues will be addressed:

  • Feasibility analysis,
  • Modes of new venture creation,
  • Business Planning,
  • Entrepreneurial marketing,
  • Sources of financing,
  • Risk management.

Tertiary level (CAPE, Associate degree, degree) training in business disciplines – Accounting, Management, etc. Business knowledge above CXC level and/or a minimum of 3 years business experience.

  • The course material will be delivered using a combination of direct instruction, and independent learning. The direct instruction will consists of explicit teaching and associated didactic questions.
  • Students will be engaged in class discussions during the last half hour of each lecture. These discussions will be based on questions posed by the lecturer and/or areas the students require further expansion in.
  • The independent learning consists of working on the Business plan, and feasibility assessment.
  • Students will be directed to online demonstration materials that explain how to develop Business Plans.
Alfred Walkes, PhD

Dr. Alfred Walkes is a full time lecturer in the Department of Management at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus. He received his B.Sc. in Management Studies from the University of the West Indies in 1996. In 2008 he was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of the West Indies. Dr. Walkes worked as a consultant to the medium and emerging business sector for over ten (10) years. Participants with whom he has consulted captured first prize in the Prime Minister’s Innovation Contest on three occasions, and second place twice in the other three contests. Before joining the staff of the University of the West Indies, he had stints with the Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme and was also involved in business training in the private sector. Some of the institutions for which he has engaged in educational and/or training assignments include the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity; Youth Entrepreneurship Scheme; Youth Development Programme; City of Bridgetown Co-operative Credit Union; and Bitwise Inc.. Dr. Walkes has research interests in entrepreneurship.
