Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Overview

This course will focus on the planning and management of all activities related to supply chain management including sourcing, procurement, supply channels, design, optimisation, demand forecasting, sales and operations planning, supply chain trends and sustainability. It will examine all of these activities within a global context and will cover supply chain management concepts, strategies, processes, tools and technologies used globally. Additionally, this course will enable students to examine various facets of global logistics and supply chain management including risk management, project management, quality management, cyber security and ethical considerations.

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
 

  • Analyse current theories of managing international supply networks;
  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques required to operate efficient and effective global supply chains;
  • Develop strategies for managing global logistics and supply chain operations;
  • Implement global supply chain strategies to support overall organisational objectives;
  • Manage global supply chain strategies to support overall organisational objectives;
  • Evaluate key decision-making criteria for sourcing and outsourcing in the supply chain;
  • Plan a global sourcing or international distribution project;

  • Analyse a company’s strategic objectives, its customer demand profiles, and its capabilities in order to design a supply chain that supports its business model;
  • Analyse the role of logistics, purchasing and operations in the design and operation of global supply chains;
  • Calculate global supply chain cost drivers;
  • Assess global supply chain performance and make recommendations to increase supply chain competitiveness;
  • Analyse contemporary challenges facing global logistics and supply chain operations.

Who Should do this Course

Important Information

The importance of supply chain management has become more apparent as the scope to outsource globally has increased. Therefore, effective management of global supply chains can significantly impact global market, global resources, and it can substantially enhance organisational competitiveness. Thus, in this course, students will gain comprehensive knowledge of and experience in managing global supply chains and analysing decisions related to global issues in supply chain management. Additionally, this course will evaluate how information technologies, dynamic markets and globalisation affect strategies and practices in the supply chain including logistics, digital coordination of decisions and resources, risk management and inventories, procurement and recruiting suppliers, as well as product and process design.

The goals of this course are to:

  • Develop students’ understanding of global logistics and supply chain management and the role of international logistics systems;
  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to manage planning, transport, sourcing, distribution, logistics, and supply chain management in a global context;
  • Develop students’ ability to conceptualise, design and implement supply chains aligned with product characteristics, the market and customers.

 The teaching methodologies to be used in this course include a combination of lectures, case discussions and assigned readings, group activities, workshops and possible guest speakers from industry.

This course will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • Coursework – 60%
  • (2) Individual Assignments – 20%
  • Case Analysis Assignment – 15%
  • Final Project – 25%
  • Final Examination – 40%

 
This two-hour final exam may consist of essay-type questions and short answer questions.
