The UWI Biggest Loser Departmental Competition, now re-branded the UWI Fit5 Fitness & Weight loss Competition, was conceptualised after Dr. Alafia Samuels, a Senior Lecturer in Public Health & Epidemiology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences and her team carried out a health study of Cave Hill staff that showed that along with leading sedentary lifestyles, very few persons ate vegetables and exercised.
These alarming and worrisome results gave rise to the birth of the UWI Fit5 lifestyle programme, chaired by Mrs. Kiana Hall and deputised by Ms. Keisha Mascoll. The main aim and mandate of the programme is to create wholesome and healthier lifestyles that can be easily maintained after the UWI Fit5 competition.
The programme comprises:
-
Lectures on Nutrition and Fitness;
-
Various Exercise classes and activities - E.g. Line dancing workouts, soca aerobics, zumba, body toning, flexibility training and hikes aimed at getting staff to be more ACTIVE;
-
Dietary suggestions to encourage healthier food choices.
The Fit5 programme has seen a number of success stories and these persons have managed to maintain their weight loss and continue to demonstrate healthier lifestyle.
