Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji)

Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Referred to as “meditation in motion” each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.

Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels.  It is inexpensive, does not require special equipment and can be practiced indoors or out, either alone or in a group.

Benefits of tai chi include improved balance, improved flexibility and range of motion in joints, increased muscle strength, relaxation, muscular coordination, reduction of stress and anxiety.

Flexibility Training

Flexibility is necessary to perform everyday activities with ease….e.g. to get out of bed, lift children, or sweep the floor.

A person’s level of flexibility is determined by several factors -  genetics, gender, age, body shape and level of physical activity. Some individuals are naturally more flexible than others. A sedentary lifestyle as well as the aging process, can be responsible for loss of flexibility.  Over time, body movements and posture habits can lead to reduced mobility of joints and compromised body positions. Staying active and stretching regularly can help prevent this loss of mobility in addition to strengthening and toning various muscle groups.  As with cardiovascular endurance and muscle strength, flexibility will improve with regular training.

Some of the benefits of flexibility training include:

  • allows greater freedom of movement and improved posture
  • Increases physical and mental relaxation
  • Releases muscle tension and soreness
  • Reduces the risk of injury

So…if you want to improve your range of motion and improve your posture, join the flexibility training class at the Bodytone Gym.
