\n What is the difference between full-time and part-time student status?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
Students who undertake a full course load (usually 4 – 5 courses) are considered full-time even though the courses maybe delivered in the evenings and on weekends. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
A part-time student is one who undertakes half of the course load and therefore takes (usually)<\/i> twice as long as a full-time student to complete the same programme. <\/p>\n
Fees in the table for UGC-funded programmes are <\/span>the annual full-time fees<\/span><\/b>. A part-time student in a UGC-funded programme <\/font>is billed 50% of the full-time rate annually. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Research students who are employed for more than 12 hours a week must register as part-time.<\/span><\/span>

\n What is the difference between applying to and registering for a programme?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n
\n
Applying to a programme means that you are seeking to be enrolled in a programme of interest.\u00a0 Re-entry applicants (those who had withdrawn from the programme and have been given permission to re-join) are also considered to be applying for enrollment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
Registration means that you can enroll to fully participate in courses. This happens after you have been made an offer, and have accepted it. You will now be eligible to register on-line during the published registration period.<\/p>\n
Applying to a programme does not guarantee that you will be made an offer.<\/p>\n

Yes. If you did not accept the place, or accepted the place offered but did not defer you will need to re-apply. Due to space constraints, your application documents would not have been retained.<\/span><\/span>

\n Can I apply for more than one programme?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

Yes. You can prioitise and choose a first option and then a second option from the list of programmes.
\nHowever, you can accept only ONE offer and you can be enrolled in only ONE programme at a time. <\/p>\n
If you are already in a programme at the UWI or elsewhere you will therefore need to complete your programme of study or withdraw from it before enrolling in a current one.<\/span>

\n What are the entry requirements for Graduate Certificates, Diplomas and Taught Masters Degrees?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

The minimum requirement for admission to Graduate Certificates, Diplomas or Taught Masters degree programmes is a minimum GPA of 2.5 or a Lower Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent.<\/p>\n
The Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research may allow admission with Pass degrees on a case-by-case basis.<\/span><\/span>

\n What are the requirements for research students?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

All applicants to research programmes must contact the Faculty\/Department directly with their research proposal before submitting an application. This is necessary to first determine whether current resources exist in the department to support your research.<\/p>\n

Postgraduate programme fees fall into two categories:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
(i)\u00a0 Self \u2013 financed programmes and
\n(ii) University Grants Committee (UGC) \u2013 Funded programmes.<\/p>\n
For self-financed programmes, students are responsible for 100% of the cost of their programme. In some instances students of self-financing programmes might obtain a scholorship from a local, regional or internationl organisation.<\/p>\n
For UGC-funded programmes, students should check with their government to ascertain what portion of fees the government covers. Barbadian nationals may view information on Government Sponsorship\u00a0 here<\/a>. Yes, there is an application fee for all students:
\nThe application fee is BBD$30\/USD$15 for citizens of UWI contributing countries.
\nThe application fee is USD$30 (approximately BBD$60) for citizens of non-UWI contributing countries.<\/p>\n

Payment should be made at the time of application. You will be presented with the online payment option immediately following submission of your application. A credit\/VISA debit card is required for online payment.<\/p>\n
If for some reason you do not pay the application fee when you submit your application, you can make your payment via the Cave Hill Campus Fees portal<\/a> or in person to the cashier at the Cave Hill Campus.<\/p>\n

The Staff Research Awards and Postgraduate Research Student Awards Funds<\/u> provide monies to support the research of academic, senior administrative and professional staff as well as research students. The aim is to provide financial assistance to as many members of staff and research students as possible to enable them to adequately carry out their research, and communicate and publish the results of research.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

The UWI (Cave Hill) Co-Operative Credit Union scholarships and the De La Rue scholarship provide support for a few students in Taught Masters programmes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

Sponsorship refers to the payment of all or some part of a student's fees by a third party.<\/p>\n
Sponsorship does not cover University fees which are the responsibility of the student and are payable every semester on registration.<\/p>\n
Countries which contribute to the running of the University have various policies governing sponsorship. It is the responsibility of students to check with their Ministry of Education (or designated department) regarding the policy of their country. Letters indicating what portion of fees will be covered by the sponsorship must be submitted direct from the Ministry to the University addressed to ???.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Government of Barbados has identified two categories of programmes and criteria for sponsorship for Barbadian students in:
\n(i) University Grants Committee (UGC) supported programmes for students with First Class and Upper second Honours degrees;
\n(ii) Programmes considered as “Areas of National Significance” for students who are registered in all classes of degrees are considered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes you can. Applicants who are preparing for examinations or awaiting examination results are required to list the pending examinations in the relevant section under the Academic Record section of the application form.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

The School for Graduate Studies and Research requires two<\/strong><\/u> referee reports. They should include at least one of your past University lecturers\/research supervisors. Applicants with relevant work experience must nominate a person with knowledge of their employment activity to act as one of their referees.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n <\/div> \n \n \n

Each chief Supervisor, or sole Supervisor as the case may be, must submit bianually (no later than January 31 for semester I and June 30 or Semester II) to the Campus Committee through the Head of Department, a report on the work of any candidate placed under his or her supervision.<\/p>\n
Member of the Committee of Advisors are required to meet at least once per year with the student, and based on their meeting(s). shall submit to the Campus Committee, through the Head of Department, an annual report on the student’s progress.<\/p>\n

Research seminars are part of the requirement in fulfilment of your research degree programme. The seminar is a presentation of your current research work in progress. By the end of the first academic year, a student should be in a position to present some aspect of their research<\/strong>. The research seminar should be seen as an opportunity to share your work and receive feedback; this process often helps to sharpen your study’s focus, refine your research questions and clarify your methodological choices, thereby ensuring that your work is of the highest standard. The student and supervisor will together determine the actual date of the research seminar. The event is often organized by the Department.

The University defines cheating as “any act intended to benefit one’s self or another by deceit or fraud.”

\nA student must not directly or indirectly give assistance to any other student, or permit any other student to copy from or otherwise use his\/her papers, nor accept assistance from any other student or use any other student’s papers.

\nIf any student is suspected of cheating, or of attempting to cheat, the circumstances will be reported in writing to the Campus Registrar. The Campus Registrar will refer the matter to the Chair of the Campus Committee for Graduate Studies and Research. The Chair shall appoint an Investigating Committee to conduct an investigation. The student may be invited for an interview.

\nIf the student is found guilty of cheating or of attempting to cheat, the Committee may recommend to the Board for Graduate Studies and Research that the student be disqualified from the examination concerned, or disqualified from all his\/her examinations taken in that examination session; or disqualified from all further examinations of the University for any such period of time as it may determine.

\nA student may appeal to the Senate against the decision of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research. Appeals against decisions of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research shall be received by the Campus Registrar within two weeks of the date on which the decision is communicated to the student.<\/span><\/span>

\n What is required for MPhil and PhD degree students to be conferred with an award of High Commendation?<\/a><\/strong>\n <\/li>\n

The award of an MPhil\/PhD shall be conferred with high commendation where the Examiners are unanimous in their recommendation that such an award should be made.

\nIn the case of Professional Doctorates, candidates must have attained a Grade A average over the coursework component of the programme, and a candidate failing a course (including an elective course) required for the completion of the programme shall be ineligible for the award of high commendation. Failure in a co-requisite course shall not exclude the student from receiving high commendation. High commendation will not normally be awarded to candidates who have exceeded the time limits for registration.<\/span><\/span>

(a) For students enrolled in an MPhil degree, a minimum of 6 credits should be taken through courses, and for students enrolled in a PhD programme, a minimum of 9 credits should be taken through courses.<\/p>\n
(b) For students upgrading from MPhil to PhD, their MPhil courses will contribute to the course requirements for the PhD.<\/p>\n
