Steve Cumberbatch: Placement at Barbados Shipping & Trading Co Ltd
I consider the Graduate Placement Programme to be the optimal on-the-job learning experience.
It provides challenges and learning opportunities that can develop any graduate/student in more aspects than any other job. I was placed at Barbados Shipping & Trading Co Ltd. There, I was attached to one of BS&T's many subsidiaries and got the opportunity to work in various areas of their core business. Although my background is Information Technology, I was exposed to aspects of Accounting & Finance, Human Resources, Sales & Marketing as well as Project Management.
I was given opportunities to coordinate and manage special projects while developing good communications skills, decision making and team work. The programme is a great opportunity to grow professionally and personally and I recommend it to any graduate/student.

Two thumbs up for the UWI Office of Alumni Relations Graduate Placement Programme! As a new graduate, I went from over 100 job letters and 2 interviews in 18 months, to gaining a spot in one of Barbados’ leading companies in just 4 months after being part of the Graduate Placement Programme.
This programme has taken on the role of an employment agency, advertising on behalf of many graduates who otherwise will find or have found it very challenging to attain jobs with their studied and chosen fields.
By liaising with the participating companies, the Graduate Placement Programme is not only benefitting new UWI graduates who are entering the job market, but also employers who may be finding it difficult to source talented personnel to operate within today’s fast-paced and evolving work environment.
The programme’s career development component and quality assessment meeting, helped tremendously in accessing me for a successful placement and to ensure I was at the calibre required.
I want to kindly thank the organisers of the pilot programme for having the insight to pioneer such a venture for the graduates.
Also, thank you for bridging the gap between myself and the world of employment.
