On June 24, 2024, the Department of Biological and Chemical Sciences (BCS) brought the wonders of STEM to Ellerton Primary School in St. George. The first day of STEM Week was all about exploring Science and its applications in various professions.
๐ฌ Ms. Kim Ashby, our Senior Lab Technician, introduced students to the world of microscopes. She discussed their role in identifying viruses like COVID-19 and let students examine slides of human skin, mosquitoes, and houseflies. The students were excited to learn about the use of microscopes in medicine and shared their dreams of becoming scientists and doctors!
๐งช Dr. Joanne Simmons-Boyce wowed the students with two interactive sessions. In her first presentation, students created secret messages with invisible ink using lemon juice and baking soda solutions. They revealed their hidden artwork with UV light or turmeric solution, learning how invisible ink is used in various fields to protect sensitive information. Her second demonstration featured liquid nitrogen, which she used to flash-freeze fruit. The students were amazed by the "smoke" and the potential for burning their mouths, and some recognized the use of liquid nitrogen from YouTube ice cream videos. Dr. Simmons-Boyce explained its uses in cooling machines and medical procedures.
๐ฅ Dr. Nikolai Holder captivated the students with a demonstration of hydrogen production from aluminum foil and water. He trapped the gas in soap bubbles and ignited them, delivering key science lessons:
- Testing: Science involves testing unknown substances to understand them better.
- Reactions: Household materials can react in fascinating ways when combined.
- Hydrogen: It’s flammable and clean-burning.
- Safety: Always handle fire with care!
The students were so impressed by Dr. Holder’s demonstration that they requested an encore!
Stay tuned for more updates from STEM Week as we continue to inspire the next generation of scientists! ๐๐ฌ๐งช
