Celebrating FST Excellence: Meet Dr. Janak Sodha
As part of our Faculty of Science and Technology's (FST’s) 40th Anniversary Celebrations, we are thrilled to recognize the outstanding contributions of Dr. Janak Sodha, a Senior Lecturer in Electronics within our Department of Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics (CMP). With over twenty-five (25) years of experience in digital communications and academia, Dr. Sodha has made significant strides in both theoretical and practical realms of the field.
A Journey Through Innovation
Dr. Sodha earned his PhD. in Digital Communications from the University of Manchester, England. His passion for advancing error-control coding has not only enriched the academic landscape, but has also led to substantial enhancements in modern communication systems. His innovative research and publications have made a lasting impact, with over fifty (50) peer-reviewed articles and conference papers to his name. Topics such as Convolutional Codes, Turbo Codes, LDPC Codes and Polar Codes showcase his expertise and dedication to wireless communication standards.
A Legacy of Research
Dr. Sodha’s contributions extend beyond academia; he has developed synchronization techniques cited in several international patents. This real-world impact demonstrates how his work in digital communications translates into practical applications that benefit society. His commitment to innovation has positioned him as a thought leader in the field.
Educator and Mentor
In addition to his research, Dr. Sodha is a passionate educator. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students, nurturing the next generation of engineers and researchers. His commitment to educational leadership is evident in the initiatives he has launched, such as
UWITube and the
Caribbean Teachers Series (CTS). These platforms provide over two hundred (200) educational videos and resources, significantly supporting students and teachers across the Caribbean.
Recognitions and Achievements
Dr. Sodha’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He was awarded the
Principal’s Award for Excellence in 2015, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the University and the broader academic community. In 2021, he was elevated to Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), an honour reflecting his professional standing and significant contributions to electrical and electronic engineering.
His leadership roles have further established his influence within the academic community. Serving as the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Chair at The UWI Cave Hill Campus (2019-2020) and as Head of the CMP Department (2016-2020), Dr. Sodha has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of digital communications education.
A Personal Insight
Dr. Sodha believes in the power of creativity and simplicity. He once stated, “
Make a blank piece of paper and a pen your best friend”. This philosophy reflects his approach to both research and teaching, emphasizing the importance of fundamental tools in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
