A True IT Pioneer
For nearly two (2) decades, Dale has served as CERMES' Resident Senior Information Technology (IT) Technician (Senior Laboratory Technician), a role in which he wears many hats – often simultaneously. As the Senior IT/Laboratory Technician, Dale is the architect behind the management of CERMES' computer lab, internal network infrastructure, server resources and much more. His deep technical expertise ensures that the centre runs smoothly and efficiently, keeping the complex systems vital to research, teaching and outreach operations at CERMES operating at peak performance.
In addition to maintaining the internal IT systems, Dale is the go-to expert for troubleshooting technical issues for both staff and students, as well as providing support for the numerous conferences, workshops and outreach events hosted by CERMES. Whether it’s assisting a student with software issues or ensuring that a live-streamed lecture runs without a hitch, Dale's ability to respond with quick solutions and patience makes him a key player in the centre's daily functions.
Managing Technology, Inspiring Innovation
What sets Dale apart is not just his proficiency in traditional IT roles, but his genuine passion for leveraging new technologies to improve outcomes and streamline processes. As a founding member of the CERMES Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit, Dale has been instrumental in integrating drone technology into the centre's research. The UAS Unit provides invaluable support for MSc. and PhD. research, offering aerial perspectives for environmental data collection, and playing a key role in CERMES' multi-disciplinary projects.
Dale’s curiosity and eagerness to innovate are evident in his role in managing CERMES' social media platforms and websites, where he ensures that the centre’s digital presence is not only up-to-date but also engaging. His work with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn helps to elevate CERMES’ visibility on the global stage, making important environmental research and initiatives accessible to a wider audience.
Above and Beyond in Times of Need
Dale’s commitment to CERMES has never been more evident than during the unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. When the world was forced into lockdown and face-to-face teaching was no longer an option, Dale worked tirelessly to transition CERMES’ classes to virtual platforms. His ability to provide remote technical support twenty-four (24) hours a day ensured that students – from across the Caribbean to far-flung regions like Nigeria and Vanuatu – could continue their studies without disruption. His unwavering dedication kept CERMES running during an incredibly challenging period, and his efforts are a testament to his commitment to the centre's mission.
A Safety Officer and Compassionate Leader
Beyond his technical prowess, Dale's contributions to CERMES also extend to his role as the Volunteer Safety Officer. For over five (5) years, he has coordinated safety drills for the centre, ensuring that CERMES staff and students are well-prepared for any emergencies. His attention to detail and proactive approach in this area speaks to his broader sense of responsibility and care for those around him.
Dale’s personal philosophy, "Let kindness be your default and compassion be your guide", speaks volumes about his approach to both his professional and personal life. Whether he's assisting a colleague with a technical challenge or guiding a student through a field exercise, his calm demeanour and empathetic nature leave a lasting impression on everyone he meets.

With over nineteen (19) years of dedicated service to CERMES, Dale’s professional journey is nothing short of inspiring. A Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), PADI-certified diver, Red Cross-certified first responder and licensed drone pilot, Dale’s diverse skill set reflects his commitment to continuous learning and personal growth. His broad range of certifications and accomplishments illustrates his drive to stay at the cutting edge of technology while also being ready to respond to any situation, whether in the lab, in the field or in an emergency.
